- Small cameras are used in a range of different applications from invitro medical operations to test and detection equipment. The Tlens technology developed by poLight as has so fare been used in midium size camera in sports watches, QR code readers and some few mobilsphones. Now we aim at new market areas that will require significant changes in size, design and materials. This project focuse on small camera solutions for invitro medical applications and other detection systems that require a very small footprint. At the same time we want to keep the good optical perfomance and high focusing speed known from the Tlens consept.

- The Tlens technology was at an early stage planned to be used in mobile phone main cameras, but over the years the size of this camera and the lens aperture (Light opening) have increased. Because of this we have to carry out R&D work to bring a stronger Tlens technology to the market. A larger aperture may also open å set of new market such as AR/VR and large screens. The actuator have give more force to the system and new actuator solutions have to be developed.. This project will be the first step towards a new actuator technology suitable for thes applications.

- sammendrag:
- poLight develops and produces active lens elements, primarily for small cameras in applications like mobile phones. New products such as optical image stabilizers (OIS) and shutter/Iris are also envisaged. To enable extended application range, as well as new applications for our products, we have started an activity for designing and manufacturing a novel ASIC driver with increased voltage capability (50V). Higher available voltage will enable more optical power. The main challenges to be addressed in this project are related to the trade-offs between performance, size and cost. High voltage capabilities while keeping low power consumption, good ESD (Electro Static Discharge) tolerance and low EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) normally come at a cost of increased device area, thus price. A smart design, using novel solutions, is required to obtain a device that meets the market tough requirements in terms of both performance and cost.

- Microfail is devoted to understanding the effect of micro fails and defects on any observed issue like cracks, delamination, corrosion, moisture absorption and haziness. Larger, more complex structures like OIS (Optical Image Stabelizer) are most likely more sensitive to these defects and it is important that we are able to control them. Samples are selected from our product test programs (Not a part of this project) and made in controlled experiments due to time temperature and environment. All selected samples are analysed by SINTEF and NTNU and evaluated in cooperation with poLight scientists. A number analytical techniques will be used including destructive and non-destructive tests described in the project description. We may also need analytical instruments not available in Norway. Through our partners we may use facilities in SNRF, CERN and som other laboratories. Finally we will tune and adjust wafer processing parameters and assembly process to avoid or reduce the number of defects.

- sammendrag:
- The mobile phone market is highly dynamic and the requirements for the auto-focus (AF) lenses become tougher every year. They need larger optical aperture and deliver higher optical power, while maintaining the image quality. There is a trade-off between these requirements, and we need to find original solutions in terms of lens architecture and processing. The targets of this project are to simulate, design and produce an AF TLens Platinum with increased image quality and higher mechanical robustness (starting from the Platinum lens developed in the previous couple of years). Very small size and low cost are compulsory requirements for components to be integrated in mobile phones. This has to be accomplished without compromising the optical performance and the long-term reliability. The requirement for manufacturability in very high volumes adds to the challenges. The design concept proposed earlier is implemented into prototypes. After their characterization, the design model will be validated and calibrated. Solutions for improved performance need to be found, by modified design, processing and/or component materials. Materials and processes that are new and challenging for such applications will be searched for and tested, to ensure improved mechanical robustness already at the wafer level. Challenges are also related to finding suitable characterization methods for such a purpose. A new packaging has been developed for TLens Platinum. It consist of a plastic frame and a flexible board for electrical connections to the camera module. The concept remains to be tested, validated for manufacturing, and proven reliable. If required, design changed will be implemented. New-generation prototypes will be fabricated. Extensive functional and reliability testing will be performed.

- sammendrag:
- The hybrid MEMS solution is new and innovative, and offers some possibilities that are not available in ordinary MEMS processing. Together with other achievements in ongoing R&D activities, we will have a good platform for introducing new products and a combined solution like AF+OIS in one die. The big difference to normal MEMS processing is the use of micro-assembly on die-level to build small three-dimensional structures cheaply and efficiently. The driving force for this innovation is a smaller footprint and a lower total cost for the final product. Another important element is an increased degree of freedom in design coming from the possibility of using different process architecture on separate wafer that has been optimized for a specific functionality. It will also potentially improve performance and functionality. Developing new MEMS products is not easy with the current technology available in the MEMS industry and our work so fare have highlighted the need for poLight to investigate a more affordable solution to generate new products. This include the use of Voice Coil Motor (VCM) or Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) as well as bulk Piezo actuators, which are more mature technology and already proven technology in the mobile industry. The poLight team does not want to close the original path completely, but would like to propose to re-open to a wider range of actuator solution in order to make the better/best choice of technology to realize the set of new functionalities and products. In 2020 we have continued the work described above. To cover the most relevant market for HybridMEMS we have focused the work on larger apertures (3,5 mm). This has forced us to develop a polymer with a higher refractive index. This is possible, but quit challenging with respect to keeping a low E-modules (softness). A relatively simple demonstrator has been built to show potential customers how it works.

- TLens poLight Auto Focus (AF) products can be considered as revolutionary products and has penetrate different markets today ranging from Webcam, Industrial and AR-VR application, the mobile application are the next big step, and more opportunities are coming. Therefore, the next generation products must have new features and performance parameters in different aspect to secure future market opportunities. The trends of miniature optics are clear. All applications are requesting even higher performances from all aspect such as optical quality and more demanding reliability requirements. Further sensors size increase and lower FN (i.e. better light sensitivity) is pushing the need towards bigger aperture tuneable optic (Auto Focus (AF) in particular). It is also important to consider that some market like the medical application will required smaller footprint tuneable optic. This request is mainly driven by the endoscope application. In this project the R&D work is focused on the different elements of the lens that are crucial for the performance, quality and life time. This typically involve improved properties of the polymer, high force in the actuator, better mechanical strength and a more optimized design of the final lens stack/camera

- TLens poLight Auto Focus (AF) products can be considered as revolutionary products and has penetrate different markets today ranging from Webcam, Industrial and smart watches. The mobile phone market has been an import application and recently the first mobile phones with Tlens have been launched. Now we introduce a totally new technology, Twedge, and possibly a new range of products. The first potential market is in AR/VR. Twedge is a transmissible polymer wedge that can shift angel using the force created by a bulk piezo actuator. By taking bulk piezo actuators into use we can use lead free soldering technology in product assembly processes.
