    sammendrag:
Despite the fact that several new purification technologies have been introduced to the O&G industry - including hydrocyclones, compact flotation, hydrocyclones in combination with compact flotation, hydrocyclones combined with CTour, Macro Porous Polymer Extraction (MPPE), and hydrocyclones combined with Nutshell filter - the primary water treatment techniques have hardly changed in the last 30 years. The above methods are all space consuming, maintenance-intensive and / or very costly in purchasing. There are also significant challenges associated with adapting water treatment technologies to field-specific conditions, as well as meeting regulatory minimum requirements. The above leads to customized, costly and low scalable solutions. Sales of new technology must therefore be based on arguments that deal with both the environment awareness and the economy. The main objective of the project is to develop and demonstrate a compact and efficient prototype unit based on flat sheet ceramic membrane for the treatment of offspec produced water for offshore O&G branch. Norwegian Recycling Services's unique approach to treating produced water is based on a combination of pre-treatment, ceramic flat-sheet membranes and integration of an unique technical solution for minimization of membrane erosion. The developed unit will be able to concentrate and minimize the final waste and be sufficiently robust and flexible to deal with a wide range of water quality and operational conditions. Norwegian Recycling Services AS aims to create a robust and scalable solution that can function as the ultimate solution for the offshore treatment of produced water. Close dialogues with ConocoPhillips have led to the proposal for one innovation contract - based on both environmental arguments, cost savings and increased revenue potential.

    sammendrag:
The production and disposal of crude oil sludges are considered as one of the most critical environmental issues in the petroleum industry. Particularly the sludge generated during the petroleum refining process has received increasing attention in recent years due to its complexity, being challenging for emulsion destabilization and oil recovery, as well as causing some corrosive damage to the storage tanks over time. One of the largest components of oily sludge is crude oil, which has great recycling value. However, the biggest challenge of oil recovery from crude oil sludges is the finding proper solutions (technical and chemical) how to separate the emulsified mixture of oil and water in the oily sludge to achieve solid-liquid separation and oil-water separation. Therefore, demulsification technology is crucial for the improvement of the recovery efficiency of crude oil. In addition, the compositions of oily sludge produced by different oil fields or refineries are varied. NRS' proprietary Mud Split chemicals have proven to be highly efficient to a wide range of oily waste treatment applications, mainly for recovery of oil-based drilling fluids. Results showed that Mud Split chemicals destabilize internal structure of emulsion by reducing the viscosity, allowing efficient 3-phase separation. The obtained results make NRS confident about its potential ability to develop a competitive and sustainable solution for oily sludge separation as alternative to thermal treatment. Successfully carried out project will contribute to turning challenging oily sludge into reusable product, what is considered as another important step of the company towards the circular economy.

    sammendrag:
Through this project Norwegian Recycling Services will get an opportunity to bring forward the technology for offshore waste treatment, what implies large positive changes for oil and gas industry and for energy profile of the region. The company believes that development of an efficient and compact wastewater treatment unit using proven technology to be implemented for offshore use can significantly improve the waste management, ease offshore operations in harsh environment and make the all the oil and gas related activities more environmentally friendly. The results of successful project realisation will imply significant enhancement of Norwegian Recycling Services's market position. Proving that solution developed by the company is to be recognised as Best Available Technology for the offshore waste treatment will lead to company expansion and positive implications for regional job market. Also it will give an opportunity for the company to expand the market for this technology to the areas with intensive oil production (US, Gulf of Mexico, Iran, Brazil). The most important benefits of the project will be improving offshore waste management, what can be recognised as an important step towards sustainable development.
