- With this project, we will be developing a new generation RCD with revolutionary ultra-wear resistant sealing technology. Current art RCD's are not wear resistant enough, which leads to costly operation downtime while they are repaired or replaced. The RCD is the key component and primary obstacle to successful realization of offshore MPD from floaters. It is crucial to develop a RCD that can withstand wear at much higher level than current art RCD's, but this is a big challenge due to high pressure and drill string angular misalignment and lateral movement/-side force. Development and wear testing of the sealing sleeves with components for rotational sealing has been carried out, but it needs further development before it can be integrated. MPD will provide many benefits with respect to improvement in safety and drilling performance in challenging reservoirs with narrow drilling windows, and enable drilling in wells that have been defined as un-drillable. Our second objective is to close the technology gaps to pave the way for the realization of marine riserless, Dual Gradient Drilling (DGD), by merging our subsea «all electric» BOP and ultra-wear resistant RCD technologies. By qualifying the control system for ultra-deep water application, the RCD and auxiliary equipment can be directly integrated with our «all electric» BOP controls and a 15-kpsi rated 18 ¾ lower BOP stack for 4000 meters water depth. These technologies will provide a game changing advance in ultra-deep-water drilling technology. They will also be extremely useful and cost effective for offshore drilling at moderate water depths and for drilling wells through depleted reservoirs and layered reservoirs with different pressure regimes. This is a great challenge, and even impossible, with conventional drilling methods.

- sammendrag:
- The Blow-Out Preventer stack is one of the key elements of subsea drilling. It is used to seal, control and monitor an oil well in case of a blowout and is the last line of defense against a catastrophe and for preventing environmental disasters. The historical development of the BOP has been characterized by continuous improvement of existing systems, instead of taking the step over to new solutions. With new requirements regarding safety regulations, stringent penalties for non-compliance, higher drilling cost, new demands considering efficiency, downtime, deep and ultra-deep operations, HP/HT reservoirs and zero emission, the weight of a BOP stack has doubled since the 1980's, while the electro-hydraulic BOP control system technology is in principle the same. This calls for alternative solutions, where ESD is in a strong position to exploit a huge business potential that has previously been overlooked by the subsea and drilling industry. The aim in this project is develop «state-of-the-art», 15 000 psi rated Electrical BOP stack for up to 4000 m water depth with new well barrier technology, replacing hydraulic equipment with new all electric actuators and control system to achieve higher reliability, improved efficiency and improved operational control. We will be able to halve the weight compared to conventional BOPs. The pre-engineering work will establish a complete design and engineering foundation for prototype development and qualification of core technologies, which will later be thoroughly tested during a full-scale BOP pilot project. We are also going to develop an upscaled 20.000 psi rated version. Because our solution is much lighter than its hydraulic counterpart, an existing rig can accommodate our upscaled «all electric» BOP system without major upgrades of tensioning system and BOP handling equipment.
