    This project aims to develop scalable and more time efficient methods for deep groundwater exploration and sustainable use, building on techniques adapted from the oil industry. The project involves developing methodologies for reanalyzing historical drilling data, modeling subsurface variability and the flow of water in reservoir simulations, and estimating aquifer replenishment rates using remote sensing and paleoclimate data. Our approach will help address global challenges like water scarcity and microplastic pollution, contributing to the advancement of sustainable water resource management.

    Geothermal energy is the thermal energy that is generated and stored in the earth. Already at low temperatures, close to the surface, this energy can be utilized to provide energy for heating and cooling of buildings and infrastructure. The rocks in the subsurface also have great capacities of storing energy in the form of heat. To date, no system or algorithm has been developed to manage effective transfer of energy to or from reservoirs in crystalline rocks, based on fractures and fracture flow. The main objective of this project is the development of a digital platform to optimize the design and management, both short- and long-term, of open multi-reservoir geothermal systems. The concept, which is scalable and adaptable to meet the needs of any site, allows construction of geothermal energy systems in areas previously considered impractical. The system can combine low temperature and high temperature aquifers to provide heat to end-users.

    Characterizing Earth’s subsurface for sustainable development Many of the environmental challenges we face regarding water resources management, land use, natural hazards, waste disposal, and energy exploration are closely related to and affected by subsurface structure and processes. Yet, detailed information of the subsurface is limited because making direct observations of its physical properties with sufficient density is challenging, invasive, and costly. A better understanding of what lays below our feet and the processes occurring therein is critical to support the development of ecosystems and society in an everchanging environment.
