    The principal idea of Geomec's planned innovation is to develop a software tool based on an advanced geomechanical framework for real-time surveillance and optimization of CO2 injection operations. The tool will cover all types of storage options including deep saline aquifers, abandoned and depleted fields and enhanced oil recovery with permanent storage of CO2, and will provide continuous information about the reservoir conditions during injection operations. Understanding the immediate response of the geological formations during injection will enable the operators to tailor, review and optimize injection operations and thus increase the safe permanent CO2 storage capacity of the reservoirs. Output from the real-time surveillance will also enable operators to conduct targeted seismic campaigns using a limited set of ocean bottom nodes in areas where leakage risk is identified. This will reduce cost related to leakage prevention and provide a system for early warning of anomalies.

    With the emerging capability to capture large amounts of CO2, there is now a need for cost efficient and secure subsurface storage of CO2. Subsurface storage options are reservoirs in deep saline aquifers, abandoned hydrocarbon fields and producing fields. Injecting captured CO2 into producing fields can boost oil recovery and extend the life of oil fields. This process, called CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), provides a potentially valuable revenue stream that can help cover the costs of CCS operations. Thus, EOR is expected to be an important stepping stone to kickstart CCS activities at a larger scale. The capability of monitoring CO2 injection processes and storage conditions in underground rock formations will be paramount to ensure reservoir integrity and permanent safe storage. If CO2 escapes from a reservoir after injection, the effort of capturing, transporting and storing the gas will be futile, and costly remedial actions have to be put in place. Thus, tools and systems to monitor, measure and verify injection processes and storage conditions will be an essential part of the final steps in the CCS value chain.     Modern methods for defining injection rates to maintain correct reservoir pressure are based on Large-Scale Models of subsurface geology. Computational grids with 10 to 100 million cells are built from seismic data and rock properties available from bore samples. However, the accuracy of the models is highly dependent on the quality of the input parameters, and the models do not give well-specific information or knowledge about well interdependencies. They require labour intensive manual calculations and pose a serious computational challenge to numerical simulators. The high complexity of the models means that they require significant time and resources to be activated, and are therefore only used for injection planning of new IOR-campaigns and periodical updates of existing campaigns. Geomec proposes a completely new approach to obtain information about reservoir response to well-specific changes in injection parameters in real-time. Instead of focusing on a high spatial resolution of the reservoir that gives a single image in time of the reservoir, we reduce the spatial resolution in order to obtain a continuously updated image (movie) of the changing reservoir response. Geomec's solution offers conversion and analysis of continuously extracted data from existing well sensors, e.g. downhole pressure and volume flow rates in producing wells, and surface pressure and volume flow rates in injection wells. There is no need to install new sensors or hardware.
