    sammendrag:
Decarbonization is now taking place in shipping and more generally in marine operations. It is the most important challenge for the ocean industries and will require substantial investments – both on research, development, and implementation, in the years to come. To reach national and international carbon emission targets in shipping, we need to decarbonize fast, by alternative low carbon fuels and or by a carbon free energy source. Different ship types, their size and their typical operational patterns have already proven that no one given abatement solution fits all situations and applications. The energy density and availability of low-emission fuels (natural gas, methanol, hydrogen and ammonia) is critical and detrimental as it affects the vessel arrangement, size and payload. All alternatives to conventional carbon-based fuels require significantly larger and more voluminous tanks and arrangement. Less payload for any given vessel type, and or increased bunkering frequency in port or offshore. State-of-the-art knowledge about the nuclear reactor-based powering of ships indicates, however, that many of these restraining effects of the introduction of new fuels are not present in nuclear powering. On the other hand, there are many other safety, social acceptance, personnel training and skills development and technology maturity questions to be better understood and answered. Thorium-based molten salt reactors (MSR) can represent a competitive and effective energy source to achieve zero-emission operations in many shipping activities. This project will, therefore, focus on exploring the existing state-of-the-art knowledge, expertise, and experience about the conceptual application-feasibility of such molten-salt vessel powering technology and develop new knowledge on the implementation of MSR technology in a replenishment vessel. The project will focus on the implications of the MSR into the design, construction and operation of the vessel and its systems.

Comparing and measuring the performance of ships, both during the design and operational phases, shall help the industry and individual stakeholders to make better, fact-based decisions, leading to more effective ships and ship operations. This shall contribute to smarter, greener and safer ships and shipping. Performance measurement will support such an approach and will be enabled by enhancing the use of data from vessels in operation and other complementary data sources. It is a prerequisite to understand how a vessel's performance is influenced by behavioral factors, in order to evaluate potential corrective measure to enhance the final performance of the vessels. This research work will ensure the knowledge basis to perform such vessel performance evaluations.

    sammendrag:
The implementation of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in shipbuilding is crucial for assessing the environmental impact of marine technologies and identifying alternative pathways that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships, their production, and overall operations. While the focus until now has been on direct emissions in the use phase of a vessel, there is increasing awareness that the ship's construction, maintenance, and end-of-life may also contribute significantly to the overall environmental impact of a ship, especially when the direct emissions are reduced. This project aims to establish an LCA method for shipbuilding and involves several activities, including the development of a tailored methodology for LCA for ship designers/shipsbuilders, the identification and collection of relevant data on the environmental impacts, and the application of a real user case. The benefits of implementing LCA in shipbuilding are numerous. LCA can help shipbuilders develop more environmentally friendly vessels by providing insights into the environmental impact of different vessel sizes, fuels, equipment, and material choices. By assessing the entire life cycle of a vessel, from design, production, and operation to end-use, LCA can provide insights into the vessel environmental impact.
