    sammendrag:
Infectious diseases in Cermaq`s salmon production The main goal is to develop knowledge and tools for combating and prevent infectious diseases effecting welfare and economic losses for Cermaq Group companies. The project is part of a long term Cermaq research strategy on preventive fish health, and for 2019-2020 the Focus is on the following 3 main topics: Intracellular bacterial diseases (SRS and BKD), Ulcerative diseases (T. maritimum and T. finnmarkense) and Viral diseases (HSMI/PRV). The two intracellular bacterium, Piscirickettsia salmonis and Renibacterium salmoninarum, the causal agent of Salmonid Rickettsial Septicaemia (SRS) and Bacterial kidney disease (BKD), respectively, are the most important pathogens in Chile today. To increase the fundamental knowledge on these bacteria is of upmost importance to lower the risk and losses Cermaq and other companies experience in Chile. This can be done by refining the production methods, diagnostics, the antibiotic therapy and the use of protective vaccines in addition to blocking infection routs. Ulcerative disease is very important for Cermaq, especially regarding fish welfare. Focusing on the genus Tenacibaculum, we aim to better understand their role in Western Canada and Northern Norway. We are among other things investigating the role of seawater adaptability in smolts in order to lower mortality in newly transferred salmon. We are also investigating if there is a reduction in sensitivity towards antibiotics in western Canada. Viral diseases is a continuous challenge in salmonid aquaculture. PRV is today one of the most important viruses in aquaculture worldwide. It has several genotypes that effect salmon differently. We will investigate there relationship and try to understand the differences between them so we can develop tools to better our production.

    sammendrag:
HSMI is caused by Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV1) and is considered one of the most important diseases of Norwegian salmon farming. A recent study analyzing 31 PRV1 genomes from salmonids collected over a 30-year period showed that PRV1 is separated into two variants: PRV1a and PRV1b. This new knowledge suggest that these two variants differ in their ability to cause the HSMI disease in Atlantic salmon. However, the prevalence of the two variants remain unknown in Norwegian salmon farming There are no current vaccines available for HSMI. More knowledge on the disease-causing factors of the virus and the diversification of low and high virulent genotypes would allow for non-vaccine strategies that could help to reduce HSMI severity in Norwegian salmon farming. This project will continue to investigate these PRV1 variants, their occurrence in salmon farming in Artic Norway and attempt to correlate this to HSMI cases. The overall goal of the project is to: Describe the genetic variants of PRV present salmon being farmed in Arctic Norway. The secondary aim is to: Compare the PRV variants we sequenced from salmon suffering from HSMI with those from salmon not suffering from HSMI.

Tenacibaculosis is a major welfare problem affecting newly sea transferred Atlantic salmon smolts (Salmo salar) in the salmon farming industry. Historically, the disease caused by the marine bacterium Tenacibaculum sp has resulted in mortalities and large economic losses. Currently, tenacibaculosis outbreaks are managed using antibiotics. However, this is problematic in several ways; it may cause reduced sensitivity against the antibiotic, it is expensive for the farmers and negatively affects the public opinion of the industry. Today, there are no vaccines available that can protect Atlantic salmon against tenacibaculosis, thus there is a need for development of effective vaccines to combat this disease. The primary objective of this study is to assess the capacity for experimental vaccines to protect Atlantic salmon against experimental immersion challenge with Tenacibaculum sp.

The main goal is to develop knowledge and tools for prevention of significant fish diseases causing economic losses for Cermaq Group companies. The project is part of a long term Cermaq research strategy on preventive fish health, and for 2018 the following research topics has been prioritized: - Pathogen screening studies - SRS (Salmon Rikettsia Septicaemia) - Ulcerative diseases - Viral diseases - BKD (Bacterial Kidney Disease) The Pathogen screening study focuses on using and developing new molecular tools for sensitive and quantitative pathogen detection in order to detect sub-clinical infections in cultured salmon. The results will be used to implement risk reducing management strategies at the salmon farms to avoid disease outbreaks and pathogen dispersal. In order to increase the fundamental knowledge on Piscirickettsia salmonis, causing SRS and develop new methods for managing this disease the activities on SRS is extensive in 2018, with activities (among others) such as developing tools to predict antibiotic sensitivity. The risk and losses due to SRS can be reduced by refining the diagnostics, the antibiotic therapy and the use of protective vaccines. Focusing on the genus Tenacibaculum, we aim to better understand their role in ulcerative disease in Western Canada and Northern Norway. We are among other things developing a consistent challenge model on salmon, and attempt a model on lump fish to look into the biological risk of co-cultivation of these two species. Viral diseases is a continuous challenge in salmonid aquaculture. Several viruses effect our production, and there is no treatment against these diseases. It is therefore important to know as much as possible about the viruses effecting our production in order to prevent and minimize impact. With focus on region XII in Chile we aim to increase the knowledge about BKD This will be done by phylogenetic studies on isolates from our production in addition to prevalence studies.
