    sammendrag:
Most of the current non-medicinal sea lice treatments involve confinement, crowding, and movement of fish. This causes significant levels of stress as well as mechanically induced wounds. Stressed fish will have reduced feed intake, and it has been shown that they are more susceptible to diseases. A robust fish capable of coping with handling induced stress is the main factor suggested to manage this issue (combined with reduced de-licing activities). Certain plant ingredients have been identified to mitigate the stress response in fish. Adding these ingredients might reduce the subsequent effects of handling stress (low appetite, reduced fillet quality etc), and improve fish health and welfare. This will be tested in an experimental feeding trial with Atlantic salmon mimicking commercial farming routines as best as possible. The project will identify plant ingredients that can reduce stress after handling and thus boost robustness, fish health, and fillet quality.

    sammendrag:
Most of the current non-medicinal delicing methods involve extensive handling and confinement causing significant stress as well as mechanically induced wounds in salmon. Stress can have a negative impact on harvest quality traits by affecting muscle metabolism and leading to softer fillets and reduced pigmentation. In this study we will investigate if the various biological forms of a micronutrient alone or in combination with each other will contribute to improved flesh harvest quality and pigmentation.

Fish are poikilotherm and water temperature has a strong effect on fish metabolism and growth. Growth is cyclic with faster growth in periods with increasing photoperiod and temperature and slower in periods with decreasing photoperiod and temperature. In addition factors like lunar phases, oxygen, feeding and exercise affects the fish. Optimum levels, minimum and maximum temperature limits are species specific, but few documentation exist on performances at different temperature levels, especially involving interactions with the factors mentioned above and energy levels in feed.

    sammendrag:
Fish skin, as well as the gills and gut, are the first barrier against opportunistic and obligated pathogens in the aquatic environment. The fast recovery of the integrity of these barriers after injury is of great importance to maintain osmotic regulation and therefore health and welfare of fish. Moreover, wounds are often considered potential entry sites for fish pathogens and can also reduce slaughter quality. Currently, sea lice is one of the main skin challenges in salmonid production causing important costs for the salmon industry. Despite the efforts made by the feeding producing companies, the available functional feedings in the market do not satisfy completely the challenges regarding skin health. In this context, the present project aimed to improved functional diets containing health additives that could improve wound healing in Atlantic salmon using a sea lice model as wound challenge model. It is expected that the new knowledge obtained from this project help in the development of improved diets designed specifically for maintaining and/or restoring skin health in fish.

    sammendrag:
During the last few years parasitic infection in sea bream gills is by far the most severe problem for Mediterranean aquaculture. These infestations are characterized by anaemia, reduced movement due to decrease respiratory capacity, severe mortalities, performance reduction and loss of commercial value of the harvested Fish. The goal of this project is to test new additives in functional feeds aimed at improving growth in infested fish, provide support for gill recovery and immune response, in addition to reducing parasite loads.

    sammendrag:
The feeds are a fundamental element for a good part of the aquaculture production. Its impact on the operating costs of companies is considerable, so that, in a context in which the profit margin is not very high, the increase in its price can have a very negative effect. And one of the fundamental parameters that determine the evolution of feed prices is, in turn, the cost of raw materials: fishmeal and fish oils and different plant species like soy, lupin, rice, wheat, etc., but also marine by product coming from fish trimming and animal by product coming from animal industry including poultry meal, feather meal, hemoglobin, etc. To cultivate fish is necessary to elaborate sustainable fish diets. Modern aquaculture need to utilize the right ingredients for every fish species, but also ingredient that are having a low impact with the environment, containing sustainability credentials but also securing the welfare and growth of the fish. Ingredients are the source of nutrient and energy to cultivated fish and they need to be well studied and knows in to obtain health and robust fish. Therefore, this particular study is trying to create a more flexible opportunity for new ingredients with potential use in marine aquaculture, specifically for sea bass, fish species with an important commercial value in aquaculture industry in Mediterranean countries like Spain, Greece, Turkey, etc. Specifically, the study will generate important information about digestibility of the ingredient and how these are affecting the fish welfare and growth.

    sammendrag:
Large yellow croaker (Larimichthys croceus) is one of the commercially important mariculture species in China. Current feed product in China is high protein and low energy product, containing high level of marine-origin resources. Feed cost is the most significant, reaching about 70 percent of total costs in the case of this carnivorous species. The high feed cost has been hindered the further development of LYC aquaculture industry in recent years. In Europe, aquafeeds has changed significantly with a broader use of various plant ingredients and less inclusion of marine-origin resources. In addition, aquafeed has become more and more energy dense to spare protein. It is crucial to develop a performance model and evaluate biological responses of economic value to give us more flexibility due to raw material usage and to be able to produce more sustainable diets for Large yellow croaker.

    sammendrag:
In the development of aquaculture nutrition, there has been lots of efforts and focus on reducing reliance on limited marine resources. Great progress has been made and cultivation of herbivorous and omnivorous species has succeed in feeds containing little or no fish meal. However, reliance on fish meal remains an ongoing constraint in marine carnivorous fish species. The aim of current project is to identify key components which exist in fish meal but may be limiting when carnivorous fish fed with low marine-origin ingredients. That is, to identify not only the essential nutrients but also those not being considered strictly nutritionally essential. Non-essential nutrients are now known to contribute significantly to the health, growth and overall performance of cultured fish. Knowledge gained from this project will help to reduce fish meal level in the feed for marine carnivorous fish species. New eco-friendly products could be developed with raw materials which has low environmental impact and also secure fish growth, health in the same time.

The California sea bass (CSB), is one of the most popular species in China. CSB are strict carnivorous freshwater fish and commercial feed available in China per date are high in fish meal level. This is mostly based on availability, rather than nutritional suitability; as most of the nutritional requirements of CSB are not yet known. Therefore, the main objective of present project is to increase a knowledge on good feed quality, raw material inclusions levels, and essential amino acid levels to be able to make feed for CSB.

Several bacterial diseases continue to cause mortalities and lowered welfare in aquaculture. In the recent years, the types of raw materials used in diets for aquaculture have expanded greatly, most of these have been terrestrial. To be able to have a robust fish, we need to be sure about the safe limits of certain components in these new materials. In this project we will test different diet compositions with regards to effects on robustness agianst disease in trout and sea bass.

Throughout the years, numerous scientific projects have been carried out to optimize fish farm conditions and improve productivity. To this end, special attention has been given to fish nutrition in terms of nutrient levels and raw material composition and the modern commercial feeds supports a more efficient growth with a low level of marine ingredients and with a broader range of alternative raw materials than used in the earlier feeds. Besides performance is also a proper pigmentation of the flesh in salmonids an important product feature. Earlier studies have reported about several nutritional factors influencing the pigmentation of the salmonid muscle. Also, environmental factors like temperature and the current commercial practices in salmon farming which involves several events that promote stress, such as handling and crowding prior to transportation, or sea lice treatments are shown to have an impact on the pigmentation. So, one of the main challenges is that it seems that it is not only one main factor which is playing a crucial role for the final pigmentation in the fillet, but an interaction between several factors. In this project we will investigate the impact of feed composition, environmental conditions, and stress, on the underlying physiological mechanism in pigment absorption, transport and incorporation into the fillet.

Fat soluble vitamins play important roles in fish larvae development. Nutritional imbalances are considered one of the major causative factors of fish larval abnormal development. The nutritionally balanced requirements on fat-soluble vitamins on fish physiology are largely unknown, particularly in larvae of marine fish species. The specific roles of the fat soluble vitamins of marine fish larvae are largely unknown. This project will investigate the role of fat-soluble vitamins for marine fish larvae.

Mucosal surfaces such as gills, intestine and skin are the first barrier of protection of the fish against the environment, participating actively in preventing the entrance of different pathogens into the fish's organism if they remain unaffected. Important bacterial and parasitic diseases affect primarily the skin barrier of fish, such as winter ulcers and sea lice, which have become very important issues in different salmon aquaculture regions. Antibiotic, anti parasitic drugs and mechanical treatments can be used for such conditions, however their use may be restricted due to concerns around antibiotic resistance, consumer perception and fish welfare. Development of new functional feeds aiming at controlling these conditions would represent a major advance for the global salmonid aquaculture industry.

Viral diseases cause large production losses in aquaculture. Functional diets can help the fish cope better with the infection by reducing tissue damage or influencing the replication of the virus by stimulating different aspects of the immune system. In this project we will develop a feed to promote robustness towards a commercially relevant viral disease in farmed salmonids.

Sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, are the major disease constraint to Atlantic salmon aquaculture sustainability, costing a large amount of economical resources to the aquaculture industry for its control. A wide range of treatment and management tools are employed for control, however, increasing parasite resistance to drug treatment is reducing the effectiveness these. Development of a sea lice vaccine would represent a major advance in sea lice control, providing a practical, eco-friendly and widely applicable tool for use in the integrated sea lice control strategy. The goal of this project is to test new additives in functional feeds aimed at improving immunological responses in fish together with appropriate mucosal vaccination strategies against the parasite.

The aim is to study the uptake mechanism of pigment and identify components and raw materials that affect pigment utilization in Rainbow Trout. Exchanging raw materials in a fish feed, even at a given basic proximate composition, requires good knowledge on their safety, as well as their nutritional and technical quality for each target fish species. It is important to understand the relations between nutrient levels, feed intake rate and fish nutrient uptake, metabolism and performance

Marine ingredients are increasingly becoming limited resources in the fish feed industry due to high price, low availability and concerns over sustainability. Sustainability is a critical factor in the choice of which raw materials a fish feed company is considering to be included in feed production for different species including rainbow trout. In order to increase the raw material portfolio for fish feed, flexibility is a must and in order to have flexibility to produce more cost-effective feeds you need to test new and novel raw materials. Therefore, raw material effects are to be investigated as well as their interactions between the different raw material combinations, and how they affect performance of rainbow trout.

The replacement of fishmeal and fish oil for more sustainable ingredients continues to be one of the main focus of the fish farming industry. However, there are still knowledge gaps that need to be filled in to provide fish farmers with a diet that perform as well as a fishmeal and fish oil-based diet, not only in terms of growth but also quality and health-wise. The increasing use of alternative ingredients has resulted in a change of not only the fatty acid composition of the feeds but also other nutrients like cholesterol. Cholesterol modulates the fluidity of cell membranes, is essential for cell membranogenesis, growth and differentiation, is a key structural component of muscle, brain and the nervous system, and is the precursor for many physiologically active compounds, including sex hormones, adrenal corticoids, bile acids and vitamin D. Few studies have reported the effects of cholesterol on Atlantic salmon growth but there is still the need to document if the high inclusion of vegetable ingredients in today's diets can affect cholesterol synthesis and, ultimately hinder growth and affect fish final quality.

Seasonality drives changes in fish performance due to differences in the photoperiod and water temperature through the year, ultimately affecting fish performance and quality. It was previously observed that during winter period fish performance decreases and in the early Spring a negative effect on pigmentation is observed, that is commonly known as the Spring drop. This phenomenon is not totally understood but previous projects point out that specific raw materials and nutrients can counteract this effect. Dietary nutrient profile and raw material selection will be key to keep high performance without compromising economic profit through the production cycle. Kick project will address how the raw material basket and nutrient profile of the diets can affect flesh final quality through the production cycle.

In Norway the SW autumn smolt trout has a very rapid growth period from April until slaughter in September (4-5kg), and the temperature is high also in the springtime due to the Gulf-stream. The spring smolt trout grow from 500g to 4 kg from September to the end of June. The feed intake is high and the growth is rapid, but performance parameters like FCR, fillet yield and visceral fat is poorer in trout than in salmon. In addition there is a need for a feed that support a more robust trout, that can sustain disease, lice pressure, cardiovascular problems and sudden death. Krill meal is promoting fish growth, feed intake, health and optimal final product quality. Commercial products like TOTAL CARE strengthen heart, health and gills, making the fish more resistant towards stressing conditions and health challenges/disease. The aim of the study is to validate feed ingredients and components that can give a high performing and robust SW trout, both during rapid growth periods and in periods with stressful environmental factors affecting the health, mortality and quality of the fish

    sammendrag:
Tasmania has salmon production during the peak of summer, and sea temperatures commonly reach 18-20°C for weeks or months, often with a drop in dissolved oxygen (DO) levels suboptimal for salmon. This is associated with reduced feed intake, growth and increased FCR in large salmon stock. Further, it is also associated with a loss of pigment carotenoids in the fillet. Feed intake in fish is partly controlled by body condition, and the daily intake of dietary energy (DE). Fish fed a diet low in DE diet usually show lower quantities of deposited fat and must consume more feed compared to fish fed a high DE diet. The Qardio-package is highly beneficial during physiologically challenging phases and enables the fish to more efficiently support the increased oxygen requirements at high temperature and hence, improve performance at high temperatures both in the northern and southern hemispheres. The aims of the current study are to test the effect of increasing DE and Qardio on growth, FCR, carcass yield and flesh quality in the recovery phase, following the summer periods

Taking into account BioMar's expansion strategy and construction of a feed factory in Australia, it is essential to develop the more sustainable, cost-effective and high performance feeds for the aquatic species produced in the field. Yellowtail kingfish (YTKF), is one of the most popular fish cultured in Australia. Sustainability of aqua-feed production largely depends on raw material availability and selection. In recent years the raw material profile of aqua-feed has changed significantly in many species including yellowtail. It is therefore crucial to develop high performance feeds and evaluate biological responses of economic value using more sustainable diets for this species.

It is well described the effect of temperature on nutrient utilisation in fish. There is an optimal temperature range where fish performance is maximised, with deviation bellow or above affecting performance and fish final quality. One of the main challenges in Norway is the cold winter time where the water temperature can decrease significantly, lowering fish performance and affecting fish final quality. Temperature is positively correlated with gastric evacuation rate in poikilothermic animals such as fishes and as a result, at low temperatures nutrients have more time to be absorbed. However, the temperature is also positively correlated with diffusion rates and enzyme activity, which facilitates nutrient digestibility, meaning that at low temperature digestibility is also affected, overriding the posible beneficial effect of the longer gastric evacuation rate. Nonetheless, this phenomenon is also dependent of diet composition. In the present trial, it will be tested components that potentially can help improve nutrient digestibility and, consequently, fish performance and quality at low temperatures.

    sammendrag:
Over the years there has been a clear trend to produce Atlantic salmon feed with higher energy levels. Such energy dense diets have generally been shown to improve feed utilization and growth. However, reducing the dietary protein to-lipid ratio may lead to increased deposition of fat in the muscle and visceral cavity. There is evidence that high levels of body lipids may reduce feed intake and growth in salmonids and is often referred to as lipostatic regulation. Thus, there is a risk of lowered growth prior to and during periods with increased feed intake and high fat accumulation when feeding high-fat diets. Increasing the nutrient density further may be a challenge, and the utilization of the nutrients should be looked into to see if there is a potential for an increased utilization/retention efficiency, especially of protein (amino acids). The majority of farmed Atlantic salmon is reared in sea cages that are exposed to seasonal environmental changes. Several studies report seasonal variation in growth and lipid deposition of Atlantic salmon, mainly due to changes in seawater temperature and photoperiod. In relation to season, farmed salmon show high fat deposition and increased condition factor, with a concomitant increase in feed intake and weight gain during the Summer and Autumn period. Prolonged high seawater temperatures and declining day length characterizes the Autumn period. During the late Autumn and Winter, a decline or stagnation in the level of muscle fat in salmon is often observed, which relates to reduced feed intake and increased FCR during low sea temperatures and short-day length. The aim of the project should be to develop a new high performance feeding concept for Atlantic salmon between (1 to 4.5 kg) through size but also seasonal optimization of the DP/DE ratio. This concept will improve protein retention efficiency, FCR, fillet yield and minimize nitrogen/ammonia excretion contributing to a more efficient and profitable production.

Viral diseases cause large production losses in aquaculture. Functional diets can help the fish cope better with the infection by reducing tissue damage or influencing the replication of the virus by stimulating different aspects of the immune system. Even for viral diseases with low mortality rates, the production or quality losses can be substantial, as is the case for HSMI. In this project we will develop a feed to promote robustness towards a commercially relevant viral disease in farmed salmonids, specifically targeting the freshwater stage.

Barramundi (Lates calcarifer), is one of the most popular predatory fish cultured in Asia-Pacific region. The majority of aquaculture production comes from outdoor fresh or salt water pond operations and sea cages, with a steadily growing production in re-circulation systems. L. calcarifer exhibits a different growth rates around the year: it grows fastest in length at the start of autumn, grows less until a full stop in the middle of winter, shrinks until the middle of spring, and then resumes a positive growth for another cycle. For this species, there has been a significant volume of work examining elements of the raw material assessment process. Traditionally produced as a "portion size" fish for the restaurant trade, Barramundi is mainly being sold as whole fish or fillets of larger fish (1-2kg). It is crucial to develop a performance model and evaluate biological responses of economic value to give us more flexibility due to raw material usage and to be able to produce more sustainable diets for Barramundi.

Whilst medicaments are used there is strong market pressure to reduce the use of antibiotics in shrimp farming. Disease and reduced robustness may result in reduced appetite, loss of condition, reduced survival post transfer or mortality. Depending on the farm can be between 80%-20% representing a high economic cost to producers. Currently, Vibrio parahaemolyticus is one the main disease challenge in shrimp hatcheries causing important costs for this sector. Despite the efforts made by the feed suppliers, the available functional feedings in the marked do not satisfy completely the challenges regarding disease resistance. In this context, the present project aimed to improved functional diets containing health additives that could improve both gut morphology/barrier and immune function as natural defenses against Vibrio parahaemolyticus. It is expected that the new knowledge resulted from this project help in the development of improved diets designed specifically to boost disease resistance in shrimp.

By optimisation of amino acid profile in diets of Atlantic salmon, we may be able to reduce total protein content in the feed with economic benefits. In addition, dietary energy will can be used mostly for protein retention and least for fat deposit. increase in energy alone or offering feed with imbalance amino acid profile will lead to adverse product quality and even lower growth.

    sammendrag:
Red mark syndrome (RMS) is an infectious skin disease of salmonids, in particular rainbow trout. The disease is increasing in prevalence within rainbow trout aquaculture in Europe. Currently RMS affects approximately one third of Danish freshwater farms, and when ranking disease importance, European farmers rate RMS one the key challenges affecting their business today. Whilst it is harmful to trout, the disease does not affect the nutritional value of the final fish product nor can be humans be affected. One striking clinical feature of the disease can be large diffuse lesions of the surface of the skin. These lesions often make it difficult for a farmer to sell their fish. The inability to sell their fish often requires operational changes in farm management further reducing the farms profitability. Currently, only chemotherapeutic strategies have been found to be effective against the disease. The aim of the project is to develop a health feed that can improve the fish

    sammendrag:
In this project we will investigate the impact of feed composition, environmental conditions, and stress, on the underlying physiological mechanism in pigment absorption, transport and incorporation into the fillet.

    sammendrag:
Gill disease is prevalent in farmed salmon from the yolk sac stage untill harvest, and can be caused by a multitude of biotic or abiotic factors such as bacteria, parasites, viruses, fungi, plankton and water quality. At the seawater stage, two of the most frequent problems for fish farmers are amoebic gill disease (AGD) and complex gill disease. Complex gill disease has so far been impossible to investigate under controlled conditions, as it caused by a combination of different factors and agents. Underlying gill issues leads to decreased fish welfare and lost growth for the farmers, and these fish will be more vulnerable to handling. Both AGD and CGD usually occur in periods of high sea lice numbers, and post sea lice treatment mortalities can be very high. We will investigate dietary strategies to minimize the negative effects of AGD infection, focusing also on the fishes robustness to sea lice treatments. As CGD is not possible to replicate in a controlled trial, we will also generate new knowledge on how functional diets can improve gill health status of fish in a commercial rearing facility.

Farming of cod is on the rise after years of lower production. Compared to salmonids there are relatively little research available, and recipes in aquaculture has changed over the last decade. Cod has different physiology and need different pellet quality, raw material composition or nutritional composition compared to other species. The project addresses issues related to Cod performance, health and mortality.

Mucosal surfaces such as gills, intestine and skin are the first barrier of protection of the fish against the environment, participating in preventing entrance of different pathogens. Bacterial diseases that involve the skin barrier, such as winter ulcers caused by Moritella viscosa, and tenacibaculosis, caused by species of Tenacibaculum, cause serious welfare issues for farmed salmon. Winter wounds, caused by Moritella viscosa, tends to appear post delicing of salmon, reflecting the damaging effect handling of fish has on the robustness against disease. In this project we will identify the main functional components to boost robustness against handling and winter wounds.

The aim of the study is to identify components that can promote sustained appetite in Sea bass. Exchanging raw materials in a fish feed, even at a given basic proximate composition, requires good knowledge on their safety, as well as their nutritional and technical quality for each target fish species. Marine hydrolysates contain high levels of appetite stimulating components for fish, such as Glutamic acid, Alanine, Glycine, Proline, Leucine and betain, which induce short term increase of feed intake. Increased feed attractability, appetite and feed intake in very low FM diets is not translated to fish body weight increase in a consequent and predictable way, and it is important to understand the relations between nutrient levels, feed intake rate and fish metabolism and performance.

Sea bass and sea bream are key economical fish species for fish farming in Mediterranean Basin. During the on-growing period in sea cages, fish are exposed to environmental stress factors (hypoxia, high temperature, crowding, handling) that affect the general fish robustness and increase their susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens (virus, bacteria, parasites). Dietary composition in aquafeeds have been mostly optimized in regard to growth performances under controlled conditions whereas the role of external stressors were less considered. A growing concern on health and welfare of fish farming have encouraged aquafeed producers to develop new feed formulation that support not only optimal growth but also health under field conditions. In the present project, several functional ingredients will be tested for their ability to protect fish exposed to sub-optimal conditions.

Growth in lumpfish is more controversial than in other fish species destined for human consumption. Lipids are used often as a source of energy to increase growth. However, the growth at rapid rate will come along with challenges in lumpfish as the fish needs to perform tasks in sea cages i.e. sea lice catch. Thus the growth must be regulated in a way that it will not disturb the fish in sea cages. Lipid level in lumpfish diet must be carefully regulated.

Fish are more sensitive to pathogen infection during their early life stages (egg, larvae and juvenile) because of their immature immune system. Currently, Flavobacterium is one the main disease challenge in trout production causing important costs for the salmonid industry. Despite the efforts made by the feeding producing companies, the available functional feedings in the marked do not satisfy completely the challenges regarding Flavobacterium. In this context, the present project aimed to improved functional diets containing health additives that could improve both gut morphology/barrier and immune function as natural defenses against Flavobacterium. It is expected that the new knowledge resulted from this project help in the development of improved diets designed specifically to boost disease resistance in trout juveniles.

Whilst medicaments are used there is strong market pressure to reduce the use of antibiotics in shrimp farming. Disease and reduced robustness may result in reduced appetite, loss of condition, reduced survival post transfer or mortality. Fish meal is a limited resource in the fish feed industry due to high price, low availability, and impact on wild fish stocks. Some studies demonstrated the effect of specific fishmeal components on overall growth and fish final quality but little information is available regarding their potential combined effect. The aim of the current project is, therefore, to provide new knowledge on the use of specific fishmeal components in feeds for salmonids, especially on how the level of those nutrients, individually or in combination, affect growth performance, physiological status, and pigmentation of Atlantic salmon.

During the last decades, numerous scientific works have been carried out to optimize the fish farm conditions and improved the productivity. To this end, a special attention has been given to the fish nutrition in term of nutrient levels and raw material compositions. These commercial feed compositions allow an efficient growth under favourable and stable environmental conditions but do not consider suboptimal field conditions which include transportation, handling (e.g. vaccination), water temperature fluctuations and water oxygen level reductions, all of which have a cascade effect on the fish physiology and their nutritional needs. As such, the standard commercial feeds could be unbalanced when good farming conditions are compromised. Current commercial practices in salmon farming involves several events that promote stress, such as handling and crowding prior to transportation, or sea lice treatments. Stress negatively affects the fish welfare and robustness, as it can have a transient negative effect on cellular stress levels and mucosal barriers, leaving the animals more susceptible to infections. In this project we will be testing a new in-feed solution to increase the robustness towards stress, improving welfare and productivity of farmed salmon

Feed is the most expensive component of an aquaculture, typically accounting half of the operating cost depending on the intensity of production. Successful farmed fish production requires optimization of feeding practices to ensure the most economically effective growth rates and feed utilization efficiencies. In this study, we aim to determine the optimal meal frequency in Sea bream: effects on nutrient utilization, growth and retention.

Live feeds are important food supply for many species of interest in aquaculture during their early life stages. Rotifers and brine shrimp (Artemia sp.) are the most commonly used live feed organisms in aquaculture due to their relatively cost-efficient protocols for stable mass production. However, the content of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n3) and eicosapentanoic acid (EPA, 20:5n3), in both rotifers and Artemia are insufficient for many marine larval fish species. BioMar enrichment product is one of the most successful product in the market for boosting n-3 HUFA, especially DHA levels in live feed. Besides of the essential fatty acids, it also boost live feed with high levels of vitamins, key minerals, immunostimulants and phospholipids. This project will investigate the effect of HUFA and the combination effect with antioxidant with sea bream larvae, via the enrichment of rotifers and Artemia.

The amount of live feed and the type of live feed will affect larvae growth performance, survival rate and deformity. The partial substitution of live food has proven to be successful. The formulated microdiets supply with the live food to enable early weaning, for instance, certain substitutuion of rotifers with artificial diets has been achieved for Gilthead seabream larvae. Although weaning the larvae from Artemia onto a microdiet can be achieved at metamorphosis in many species, the early introduction of formulated diets for completely replacement of live food remains to be difficult. If a microdiet is well balanced, it is possible to reduce the live feed consumption without compromise the larval performance and survival, and it is the ultimate goal for the development of microdiets, and lots of efforts have been made by industry and academia during the last few decades. However, to our knowledge, studies on the effect of live feed reduction on the growth performance, survival and deformity rate of seabream larvae have never been published. It is therefore important to document the effect of live feed reduction on larvae performance.

Feed ingredients are the most critical input to the costs and sustainability of aquaculture. A significant proportion of the carbon footprint in salmon farming is related to raw materials. For this reason, BioMar aims to reduce one-third of its carbon footprint, with a strong commitment to utilize 50% of its raw material coming from circular and restorative sources by 2030. One such ingredient is a new low carbon footprint, low anti-nutritional factor soy which has better sustainability credentials compared with conventional soy protein concentrate (SPC). This project will determine the anti-nutritional factors present in the new soy product in addition to overall performance, feed intake, and health that could be used to replace conventional SPC in commercial salmon feeds. This will be assessed by evaluating the effects of the new soy product on feed intake, performance, gut health, fillet quality, welfare, and overall health of fish.

    sammendrag:
In recent years, the aquaculture industry has faced significant challenges related to the sustainability of fish feed. Traditionally, fish oil was a primary component of salmon feed, but due to sustainability concerns and rising costs, there has been a shift towards plant and algae oils. However, this shift has raised new questions about the optimal balance of essential fatty acids in salmon diets, specifically the ratios of omega-6 (n6) to omega-3 (n3) fatty acids and the ratio of two key omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. This project aims to address these questions by conducting a comprehensive study on the effects of different n6/n3 and DHA/EPA ratios on the growth, health, and fillet quality of Atlantic salmon raised in sea cages, a more commercially relevant setting than the tank conditions typically used in existing studies. The study will involve a long-term trial with multiple points of n6/n3 ratio and will also consider the interaction with DHA/EPA ratios. The results of this study will provide valuable new insights into the optimal feeding strategies for salmon farming, balancing cost-effectiveness, fish health and quality, and sustainability. Ultimately, this project will contribute to the development of more optimized and sustainable feeding strategies for the salmon farming industry, leading to higher quality products, cost savings and reduced environmental impact.

Dietary protein and essential amino acids play pivotal roles in the nourishment of fish, as they are indispensable for growth and overall development. However, protein is the expensive component in the diets and excess dietary protein leads to high nitrogen discharge to waters which might in turn affect feed intake and fish growth and overall aquaculture system. Notably, in the past few decades, plant proteins have gained widespread usage in aqua feed as substitutes for fishmeal. While this substitution is motivated by various reasons, it tends to introduce an imbalanced amino acid profile within the dietary protein composition. In this project, we will develop a model to be able to predict nutrient retention, improve performance based on variable levels of digestible protein and essential amino acids ratio in the diet profile.

Viral diseases are one of the most important health challenges in Atlantic salmon farming industry in North Sea. In Norway, the high prevalence of heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HMSI) and cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) and pancreas disease (PD) in sea phase has persisted. The extensive surveillance program and new DNA vaccine against SAV-3 have improved the situation of PD. However, the number of detections of PD was still high in 2022. Due to lack of vaccines and non-notifiable, control of HSMI and CMS has been very challenging. High mortality after sea lice treatment has been often linked to the HSMI and CMS. In addition to the significant economic losses, concern about fish welfare has been increased. Incorporating the utilization of functional feed could be a cost-effective solution for minimizing the economic loss and improving the fish welfare in salmon farming. In this project, we will evalaute the effect of functional compoents on enhancing immunity and increasing the resistance to the viral disease, which will mitigate the tissue damages, promote the recovery, maintain the feed intake, reduce the body weight loss, and improve the welfare, by using PD and CMS challange models.

Sustainability within feed production largely depends on raw material availability and selection. In the recent years the raw material profile of feeds for aquaculture used in Norway and Europe has changed significantly with a broader use of various plant ingredients and less and less inclusion of marine raw materials. The feeds for aquaculture have, in addition, been more and more energy dense. In China the inclusion rate of marine raw materials is still quite high compare to for example Europe and the feeds are less energy dense. Further is trash-fish still used as feed for Large yellow croaker of many farmers in China but the usage will be abandoned within few years. It is crucial to develop a performance model and evaluate biological responses of economic value to give us more flexibility due to raw material usage and to be able to produce more sustainable diets for Large yellow croaker throughout the Whole Production cycle.

    A. salmon will be fed with sustainable raw materials replacing fish oil and/or fish meal on typical farming conditions. The use of algae products and single cell protein have been documented in tanks with controlled conditions. Algae products are rich on EPA -DHA suggesting that its use will reduce the use of fish oil. While single cell protein have shown to have positive health effect related to fish robustness. However, there is a question on how does the effect of this raw materials when fish is fed under typical farming conditions. At such conditions fish is challenged with temperature and oxygen fluctuations, diseases, parasites and handling. This project will document the effect on performance, health, robustness and fillet quality.

    sammendrag:
Globally there is a limited and/or fixed availability of fish oil. Consequently, the average inclusion level of fish oil in salmon diets has decreased during the last 10-15 years, however level of PCBs and dioxins in the fish flesh after consumption is still quite high. For the Norwegian salmon industry to continue to provide salmon rich in omega 3 (EPA+DHA) it is necessary that the feed industry increases research into innovative sources of EPA & DHA and develop alternative oil-mixes to standard fish oil which provide less contaminants. However, this becomes difficult when combined with the new regulations on the ban of ethoxyquin as an antioxidant to stabilize the shelf life of the feed, the recommend seven fold reduction in the tolerable weekly intake of PCBs and dioxins and competition with the omega-3 capsule industries. The main bottleneck for the introduction of novel oil raw materials in aqua feeds has been price. However, when produced at industrial scale, the price of certain products is not that far from high quality FO prices and perhaps more importantly, the consumers are willing to pay for such products today compared to 10-15 years ago. Together with a competitive price, no ethoxyquin and little to no PCBs and dioxins, certain raw materials will become the new primary ingredients in salmon feeds.

    sammendrag:
California sea bass (CSB), is one of the most economically important species in China. Traditionally are the feeds in China based on crude values for protein and lipid, and not on digestible- protein (DP) and energy (DE). The digestible protein is the protein which the fish can digest and utilize for the biological processes like growth. A feed formulation based on DP and DE allows for a better optimization of the diet and utilization of the raw materials. In this project we are aiming to discover the optimal DP/DE level for CSB between 200-400g. High water temperature is a challenge for the farmers in China and the farmers are reporting that high lipid levels in combination with high temperature seems to make the California seabass more vulnerable for stress. The second objective of the present project is to evaluate the impact of dietary lipid level on performance and stress tolerance.

Development of new functional feeds agianst the parasite would represent a major advance in sea lice control.

Both lipid and essential fatty acids (EFA) are essential components of biological functions and play pivotal roles under various stress conditions. In fish farming including seabass, the dietary lipid and FA contents have been defined to provide optimal growth performances under optimal conditions. In reality seabass farming has to face to various stressors. Thus for optimum health and overall performance under challenged conditions (eg stress tolerance) the EFA requirements may be different. This experiment will help to define the optimal lipid and EFA dietary levels to support growth and robustness in seabass during challenging conditions.

Taking into account BioMar's expansion strategy and construction of a feed factory in Australia, it is essential to develop the most sustainable, cost-effective and high performance feeds for the aquatic species produced in the field. Barramundi (Lates calcarifer), is one of the most popular predatory fish cultured in Australia. The majority of aquaculture production comes from outdoor fresh or salt water pond operations and sea cages, with a steadily growing production in recirculation systems. Sustainability of aqua-feed production largely depends on raw material availability and selection. In recent years the raw material profile of aqua-feed has changed significantly in many species. It is therefore crucial to develop high performance feeds and evaluate biological responses of economic value using more sustainable raw materials for barramundi.

Formulated feeds consist of a blend of different raw materials that together create a complete diet for a farmed fish. The choice of and amounts of ingredients will all affect the nutritional quality of the diet, which again affects the fish growth. The ingredients can also be processed in different ways, and the use of different processing technology may influence the quality of the diet. The purpose of this research project is to test how different processing technology of raw materials or blends of raw materials affects the quality of diets for farmed Atlantic salmon. The diets will be evaluated based on their nutritional and physical quality, as well as in a biological trial where we will see how they influence the fish performance.

    sammendrag:
Globally there is a limited/fixed availability of fish oil. Consequently, the average inclusion level of fish oil in salmon diets has decreased during the last 10-15 years. Due to strict instructions on what type of fishery oil can be sourced (IFFO RS, MSc certificates, etc.) together with the new publication on the reduced tolerable weekly intake of PCBs and dioxins and the ban on ethoxyquin in 2020 makes the job even more complicated for the sourcing departments. Based on an increased sourcing complexity, the competition with the omega-3 capsule industries and a limited availability, LC-PUFAs from alternative sources has become more and more relevant. The main bottleneck for the introduction of such raw materials in the feeds has been price but now also includes the removal of ethoxyquin and zero or close to zero PCBs and dioxins. However, when produced at industrial scale, the price of certain products is not that far from high FO prices and perhaps more importantly, the consumers are willing to pay for such products today compared to 10-15 years ago. Together with a competitive price, no ethoxyquin and little to no PCBs and dioxins certain raw materials will become the new primary ingredients in salmon feeds.

    sammendrag:
In recent years, global salmon industry have been negatively impacted by a number of gill conditions, causing increased mortality and overall decline in production efficiency. As a result, gill health has emerged as the key challenge to the salmon industry. Gill health is routinely monitored by macroscopic scoring of gill arches in farms. Based in results from a previous project, it is suspected than macroscopic scores have no common underlying histopathology or molecular signature, suggesting either a lack of resolution in macro scoring or a lack of mechanistic link between scores and other parameters. In addition, it seemed to be a significant site and time signature. However, these two may be confounded, making it impossible to distinguish between spatial (location) and temporal (season) causes of variability in gill pathology. In the current project, we will attempt to unlock the mechanisms underlying the variability in gill pathology, generate novel diagnostic tools to monitor gill conditions and design functional feeds to improve gill performance in order to maintain healthy population of farmed fish, benefiting industry, consumers and environment.

Lipid and carbohydrate are key nutrients that they play pivotal roles during stress periods. In fish farming including seabass, optimal dietary lipid and carbohydrate contents have been defined to provide the best growth performances under optimal conditions. However farms has to face to various challenging conditions that could affect the nutrient requirements. This experiment will help to define the optimal lipid and carbohydrate dietary levels to support growth and robustness in seabass during challenging conditions.

Fish larvae are among the smallest free-living forms of vertebrates and exhibit fascinating growth potential. In fish aquaculture, the larval phase has traditionally been considered the most sensitive period. The vulnerability at this stage has been a powerful driving force for fundamental and applied research. The development of basic larvae culture procedure based on feeding with live feed, such as rotifers and Artemia abound 1980s allowed a constant supply of fry to support the increasing fish farming production. Research on fish larvae biology has continued and our basic knowledge and rearing methodologies has improved. However, there are still large knowledge gaps and the rearing process is far from optimal. The improved development of fry production is essentially affected by the efficiency of first feeding regimes and the high nutritional quality of early weaning diets. Both live preys and microdiets should meet the nutritional requirements of each species to ensure the best growth and survival rates. During the past few decades, extensive efforts have been made to develop microdiets as a complete or partial substitution for live feed. The majority of the studies have focused on the larvae

The aim of the study is to identify components that can promote sustained appetite in Trout both during sub-optimal conditions; strong seasonality in daylight hours, very low temperatures, high temperatures with low oxygenation and disease. Exchanging raw materials in a fish feed, even at a given basic proximate composition, requires good knowledge on their safety, as well as their nutritional and technical quality for each target fish species. Increased feed attractability, appetite and feed intake in very low FM diets is not translated to fish body weight increase in a consequent and predictable way, and it is important to understand the relations between nutrient levels, feed intake rate and fish metabolism and performance during the seasonal changes

Currently, White Spot Syndrome Virus is one the main disease challenge in shrimp farming causing important costs for this sector. Despite the efforts made by the feeding producing companies, the available functional feedings in the marked do not satisfy completely the challenges regarding disease resistance. In this context, the present project aimed to improved functional diets containing health additives that could improve both gut morphology/barrier and immune function as natural defenses against White Spot Syndrome Virus. It is expected that the new knowledge resulted from this project help in the development of improved diets designed specifically to boost disease resistance in shrimp.

The amount of live feed and the type of live feed could potentially affect larvae growth performance and survival rate. Hatcheries in East Med are using green water and rotifers at start feeding, while customers in West Med use Artemia directly. It is important for us to document the effect of different feeding protocols on larvae performance then we can give a guideline for using our product. Therefore, this particular study is trying to determine the optimal feeding protols, specifically for sea bass, fish species with an important commercial value in aquaculture industry in Mediterranean countries like Spain, Greece, Turkey, etc. Specifically, the study will generate important information about feeding protocols and how these are affecting the fish welfare and growth.

During the last few years parasitic infection in sea bream gills is by far the most severe problem for Mediterranean aquaculture. These infestations are characterized by anaemia, reduced movement due to decrease respiratory capacity, severe mortality, performance reduction and loss of commercial value of the harvested Fish. The goal of this project is to test new additives in functional feeds aimed at improving growth in infested fish, provide support for gill recovery and immune response, in addition to reducing parasite loads.

    sammendrag:
Potential effects of stressful environment and handling stress in salmon are not well documented, and controlled studies are lacking. Stress is an unavoidable component of salmon farming and the fish may be exposed to several acute stressors such as handling and transport, or to more chronic stressors such as poor water quality, social dominance, high density and disease, which can affect fish final quality. This experiment will document the effect of stress agents and feed composition on fish final quality.

    sammendrag:
Fish farming has to face to various challenging conditions that could affect the nutritional requirements in fish. However, most of the nutrient requirements have been defined based on performances obtained under optimal conditions. To be able to define specific requirements under challenging conditions, it is essential to develop experimental stress models that will mimic natural stresses. New raw materials and new nutrient compositions could be tested with these models and thus contribute to support feed innovation.

    sammendrag:
Feed is the most expensive component of an aquaculture, typically accounting half of the operating cost depending on the intensity of production. Successful farmed fish production requires optimization of feeding practices to ensure the most economically effective growth rates and feed utilization efficiencies. Aim of this project is to examine the feeding behaviour of sea bream and sea bass when fed a same recipe and their immediate feeding response when presented with different pellet size.
