- New Amigos is most well-known for its innovative and award-winning board games that help users to learn each other’s language. Given the success of our board games, we are now venturing into the digital realm and developing a language learning app that connects native speakers from across the globe to become friends and learn/practice a new language. The main challenge we face is known how to pair up language learners and ensuring that the app remains a safe space to learn. We need to find out: - how to profile our users and what data to gather - what needs and wants our users have for their social language learning experience - how to match users in terms of learning goals, communication preferences, and language ability - how to define inappropriate behaviour - how to screen for and identify the inappropriate behaviour - how to respond to inappropriate behaviour and ensure a safe learning environment The findings will be used to create a match-making system that is integrated into the New Amigos app and allows us to automatically pair up our users, enhance their learning experience and language acquisition, and to make sure the platform remains a safe space. This project will open up many new opportunities. A successful app will build on the successes of our board game and provide access to those who are unable to use our board game. Language learners from all over the world will be able to learn a new language, provided they have access to the internet and a smartphone. It will foster international friendships, promote cross-cultural understanding, provide teachers and other educators with an additional language learning tool, and promote language learning in an organic and social manner.
