    CMS has become a major problem for salmon aquaculture particularly for larger fish. Marine Harvest have been investigating the genetic variation for resistance to the virus, PMCV, causing this disease since start of 2017 (project 279206). This project will benchmark fish which have been selected to be resistant against PMCV against fish which have not in order to measure the response to selection for this important disease. At the same time we will record and sample fish affected by this disease on production sites and genotype fish to investigate whether the same genetic variants are involved in challenge tests and on production sites.

    Pancreas disease is a major disease causing significant morbidity and mortality in Norway. There are a number of viral variants causing this disease the most common in Norway being the SAV3 variant. Mowi Norway has already been selecting for resistance against this variant with some success for a number of years. Another variant called SAV2 is becoming an increasing problem and underlying cause of PD outbreaks in Mowi south and mid in particular. This project will investigate the genetic variation in response to an infection of the SAV2 virus among family identified fish and will compare the genetic response to that from the SAV3 virus to investigate whether the same genes are involved.

    Pancreas disease is a major problem for the salmon farming industry in Norway. The disease causes considerable mortality as well as morbidity often in large fish at sea. Marine Harvest have been selecting for resistance against this virus (SAV3) for a number of years. A previous benchmark study demonstrated a significant difference between selected versus unselected smolt for susceptibility to the virus as well as difference between selected and vaccinated fish. This study, based on a SAV3 challenge test, will use the three PD vaccines currently on the market in Norway. For each vaccine and an unvaccinated group both high and low selected smolt will be used. This will allow us to investigate both the effect of the vaccines and also the effect of vaccination and selection together.

    Sealice infestation of Atlantic salmon is a major problem for the industry both for the production costs of treating sealice infection and because of the welfare and environmental consequences from such outbreaks. A previous project (279208) investigated the genetic variation for sealice resistance both in a seasite 'natural' infection and in tank challenges. This project also compared both these challenges to find correlations between the two and to determine which is more successful. This project will seek to benchmark fish from parents selected for sealice resistance against those not selected in order to determine how much improvement in this trait can be achieved each generation. This information is important in order to compare the strategy of genetic selection against sealice with other strategies (mechanical removal, clearner fish, bath treatments..). This project will also further investigate the differences at the genome level between fish more resistant to lice against those more susceptible with the aim of finding genetic variants or QTLs having a significant effect on resistance. For this purpose we will use a full family challenge with all nucleus families represented

By seperating males and females we hope to exploit the gender differences in order to increase growth and have the potential to adjust the time of harvest in a way that optimises production.     Understanding the underlying genetic architecture of traits is an important goal for the Salmon industry. This understanding will result in more efficient selection strategies to improve these traits as well as other benefits such as in vaccine development where the trait is a disease resistance trait.     The disease HSMI causes major losses to the Norwegian salmon aquaculture industry both in terms of mortality and morbibidy. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that there is a significant genetic component to resistance to HSMI and that there are QTLs which have significant effect on resistance. This project aims to investigate this further through challenging family identified fish in a PRV tank challenge test and by collecting data and DNA samples from fish undergoing this disease in a production setting.

    The advent of genomics technologies has had a very significant positive impact on the genetic improvement of farmed animals including in the aquauculture sector. Genomic technologies allow for more efficient selection of breeding animals particularly for traits which are difficult to record on the candidate broodstock themselves such as disease resistance. While these technologies (genotyping, genomic analysis etc..) have progressed very fast one limitation in their application is that the physical tagging and DNA sampling of animals, particularly finfish, can be a bottleneck in the large scale application of genomic selection in a fish breeding program. This project aims to find a solution for the high throughput, reliable and secure sampling and tagging of juvenile fish while securing the data and the highest levels of fish welfare. At the same time this project will investigate an alternative genotyping method which is particularly suited to allow for the pre-grading described above in particular by allowing a relatively large number of genetic markers to be investigated at high speed and low cost.

    Ballan Wrasse are now an important species in the battle against the sea lice parasite on salmon sea farms. Until recently most of the wrasse deployed in sea cages came from a wild catch. These days most wrasse have a farmed origin coming from broodstock which were caught in the wild. This project aims to develop a wrasse breeding project in Mowi which will focus initially on developing genetic and cryopreservation tools to assist in the selective breeding of Ballan wrasse. The outcome of this project will hopefully be a more robust and more sustainable production of this species for use in salmon aquaculture without the use of wild caught broodstock.

    Pancreas disease is an important disease of salmon aquaculture. Breeding for resistance against the causative agent, SAV, has resulted in improved survival when fish are exposed to this disease both in the farming environment and in challenge tests. As a result a different challenge model is being tested here on larger fish which will hopefully allow for the continued recording of the resistance phenotype and therefore continued selection against this virus.

    Haemorrhagic smolt syndrome (HSS) and Salmon Pox virus are not new diseases of salmon aquaculture but they are causing more significant levels of mortality and morbidity in recent years. Neither of these diseases have been investigated at the genetic level in order to determine the amount of genetic variation present for resistance/susceptibility. This project aims to do that by sampling fish from commercial sites, both freshwater and marine, which are undergoing outbreaks we will be able to measure the amount of genetic variation present and hopefuly identify QTLs influencing these traits.

    This project will test whether it is possible to store milt in a hatchery situation over an extended period. Milt will be extracted from males using two different methods and two different preservatives will be used either alone or in combination and over a number of different periods. The experiment will also be carried out in two hatcheries and with controls. The ultimate objective is to have access to all top genetic or nucleus milt over the main part of the breeding program without freezing milt.

    The primary objective of this project is to develop methods for implementing single-step genetic evaluation, combining genomic and pedigree information, in aquaculture breeding programs. By making better use of all available information, including information on ungenotyped, practical grow-out fish, this project is expected to increase accuracies of genomic predictions and utilize between population and generation genetic differences, thereby making best use of all available data and genetic resources and improving the sustainability of Atlantic salmon aquaculture.
