    In this Project, EderaGen AS is developing a product (EderaGard®) built on ecological principles, for the purpose of restoring and stabilizing the microbiota in the human gut. The Project has already made a discovery which is highly surprising for those skilled in the art, and a patent application was submitted in June 2019. Gut dysbiosis is an imbalance in the ecosystem constituted by billions of microbes in our gut. It is the root cause of multiple serious health problems in Western societies, such as obesity, inflammatory disorders, asthma, allergy, autism, and untreatable gastroenterological conditions. The Project represents a completely new, ecological approach to counteract gut dysbiosis in humans. EderaGen AS uses its own in vitro techniques in combination with advanced ultra-high-throughput DNA-analysis (EderaMap®) to characterize the complex microbial community of the gut microbiota and as a tool for developing EderaGard®. Probiotics and prebiotics are commonly claimed to affect human gut health positively, but there is little scientific support that these are in fact beneficial. The Project represents an approach which does not fit with any of these categories. EderaGard® does not contain live bacteria, nor does it provide nutrition to the gut microbiota. Instead, EderaGard® functions as an eco-stabilizer. It is a new and different type of product. In an ecosystem of human gut microbiota, bacterial numbers increased and diversity was maintained in the presence of the same prototype EderaGard® composition. In addition, the level of gut bacteria normally seen as favourable increased, whereas bacteria which are seen as unfavourable in large numbers (but which are still necessary) were suppressed. These remarkable results represent a patentable novelty. Further work on the Project could generate additional patent application(s). EderaGen cooperates with the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo on this Project.
