- Our SynoProtein project aims to develop, mature and demonstrate a novel carbon-negative process that enables high value creation from sawmill by-products through carbon capture and use (CCU). The consortium has developed an innovative process for the vertical integration of by-products from sawmill industry, i.e. feedstocks comprising only residues (no sawlogs), and conversion into fish feed ingredients, i.e. single cell protein (SCP), along with the production of biochar for animal feed. Thus, our process can provide novel, sustainable protein sources, as opposed to conventional energy- and climate-intensive soybean and resource-limited wild fish protein production routes to meet future demands. SynoProtein will demonstrate that 1.25 tons (t) of CO2-e can be captured from syngas via CCU for each dry-ton sawmill by-products processed. This clearly makes our SynoProtein innovation unique and is why it will introduce a green paradigm shift for the recycling and commercialisation of low-value by-products feedstocks into high-value bio-products. This project joins together a balanced consortium of 11 partners, covering the whole SynoProtein value chain, from industry, academia, and research institutes, which spread to 4 different European countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany), but with worldwide operation with their sister companies. Overall, we expect carbon capture of 200kt of CO2-e from syngas annually with our process by 2033, recovering 160kt/year of forest residues and producing 120kt/year of fish/animal feed for industry, valued at €175m. This also represents 260 jobs created in EU and reduced 120kt per year imported feed ingredient from other continents. Compared to fish feed production from soybeans, our SynoProtein is also expected to save carbon emission of 458kt CO2-e, land use of 147km2, and water use of 630,700m3 by 2033. It fits strongly with the mission of the CBE JU “advancing a competitive bioeconomy for a sustainable future”.

- The Norwegian Process industry Roadmap lays the foundation for an accelerated utilization of Norwegian biomass resources that would reduce the carbon footprint and targets a 43% reduction of CO2 by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. To enable this transition, metallurgical industry in Norway seeks to substitute large amounts of biobased material for fossil reductants in their processes. Biocarbon produced from biomass materials has great potentials to replace fossil reductants and increase sustainability of metallurgical industry. R&D activities and industry practices are urgently needed to secure production of affordable biocarbon with constant and suitable properties satisfying demands required by metallurgical industries. This project responds to national and regional strategies and goals to exploit local available wood wastes and produce biocarbon with enhanced properties for metal production applications. Conversion of wood waste to high value biocarbon can considerably improve material efficiency and boost development of regional circular economy. Production and upgrading of biocarbon through novel measures will further improve quality of biocarbon for transportation, storage and application. Realization of the objectives of the TOPBIO project can further improve marketability of biocarbon and promote industrial scale utilization for greener metal production. The TOPBIO project aims to produce top quality biocarbon from wood wastes for metallurgical industries through (1) optimised sourcing and leaching of wood wastes with sufficient quality satisfying biocarbon production and (2) densification of biocarbon with novel use of bio-oil as binder to maximize mechanical properties. Anticipated project impacts include reducing high dependence of metal production on fossil reductants, production of low-cost and high-performance biocarbon from sustainable raw feedstocks, boosting development and adaption of novel technologies in the regional and national industry sector.

- The great concern of global warming and ever-increasing demand for energy have triggered an urgent shift from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources. Driven by this ongoing clean energy transition, demand for batteries is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. Batteries offer a very tangible opportunity to store and provide energy on demand reliably and swiftly to end users for different applications. As a strategic action area, batteries are expected to play a far more important role than today. And this trend will be reinforced with the release and implementation of new and comprehensive legislative and governance frameworks globally and domestically. The BIOANODE project responds to EU and national battery strategies by focusing on sustainable production of affordable biobased anodes for sodium-ion batteries. The project will contribute to the battery production value chain by adapting renewable raw materials, tuning the production process and reducing costs. In BIOANODE, pilot production of biocarbon and anode carbon in kg scale is planned, which will be conducted under industrially relevant conditions. A systematic interdisciplinary study and comprehensive material characterization will be conducted to investigate physio-chemical properties and electrochemical performance of the carbon materials produced from the pilot scale production process. Through this Innovation project, WAI, together with SINTEF Energy Research and NTNU, aims to develop its compacity and competence in producing and application of renewable carbon as anode material for battery production. A postdoc researcher will be employed by NTNU and actively participate in R&D activities.

- Waste management companies in Oslofjord region and in general are facing challenges with organic waste disposal. The organic wastes include food waste reject, anaerobic digestate, car wash sludge, oily sludge, agricultural wastes and municipal solid wastes. Valorisation of organic wastes can be performed by means of a thermal-chemical process, namely pyrolysis. In a pyrolysis system, under anaerobic conditions, wastes are turned into products as biochar, pyrolysis liquid and non-condensable gas. Pyrolysis for organic waste treatment is a relatively new concept in Norway. In this project a systematic method will be developed to guide pilot scale pyrolysis studies of different organic wastes. As results of the project, a comprehensive database on pyrolysis products will be developed and preliminary guidelines on how to integrate pyrolysis and its products into actual applications with local stakeholders to benefit circular economy will be formed.

- Biogas is produced in anaerobic digester (AD) where microorganisms convert organic materials to methane and carbon dioxide. Biogas from waste is renewable energy and can significantly contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction. Compressed biomethane (CBM) and liquified biomethane (LBM) will play key roles in the transport sector in the Norwegian scheme of phasing out fossil fuels. It is expected that the biogas fuel market will grow from 300 GWh in 2016 to 3000 GWh in 2025. The typical organic conversion rates in AD are ranged 30-50%, which means over 50% of organics in waste end up in digestate. Digestate can be used as organic fertilizer. However, issues, such as microplastics and pharmaceutical residues in digestate, GHG emission during digestate storage and transportation and high transportation costs for diluted digestate, are still associated with current digestate handling practises. On the other hand, lignocellulosic wastes, such as garden waste, sawdust, agricultural wastes and forest wastes, has enormous potential as bioenergy. However, these waste streams are not considered as primary feedstocks to AD due to existence of lignin and its strong interaction with cellulose and hemicellulose which is the main hurdle to the conversion of lignocellulosic materials to biogas. In this study a thermochemical- and biological-integrated solution will be developed and tested to recover energy in the form of biogas by converting non-biodegradable organic in digestate and lignocellulosic materials to biodegradable feedstock to AD, and meantime to produce biochar and eliminate most of microplastics and pharmaceutical residues in digestate. The proposed solution would empower biogas plants to maximize biogas production via treating digestate and lignocellulosic wastes in existing facilities to meet growing demands from the transport sector and become more sustainable when facing stringent government regulations in the future.
