- This project is the development of a novel 3D material derived from Purified Eggshell Protein (PEP), a readily available by-product from the egg industry: Egg Shell Membrane (ESM). Biovotec has already developed a dissolvable PEP-based 2D product, DermaRep, during successful SME 1 & 2 projects. Pre-clinical studies have shown that DermaRep is equivalent to collagen in the pig wound healing model. Now, it is entering clinical trials and expected to receive CE mark in 2020. However, its application only adequate for superficial wounds which have limited severity and depth. This project, DEEPCURE will be developed only for deep and severe wounds and burns and thus will be a logical, non-overlapping extension of the DermaRep line. The endpoint of this project is confirmation of biocompatibility and safety of the developed product in animal studies within 2 years from the start of the project. At the end of the project, the new 3D product will be ready for its final pre-clinical efficiency test. Our PEP based product line, DermaRep and upcoming DEEPCURE, is disruptive and we will become the benchmark in the wound healing market offering prices 5x lower than the competition, a major cost and time saving for hospitals.

- In this project Biovotec aims at clinically testing a novel cost-effective wound dressing based on a novel biomaterial derived from eggshell membrane to be used as first-line treatment in all wounds at risk of delayed or non-healing, reducing the incidence of chronic wounds, such as venous and diabetic ulcers. In order to do so, we have then set up the first of its kind manufacturing process steps done under the medical device ISO regulation. Our first medical device is a dissolvable film which addresses both the technical side but also on the cost side. We have through this established a pilot manufacturing process for the wound healing film device and successfully completed all preclinical tests required. We will now test the device clinically in both the UK and France.

The goal of this follow-on project is to R&D tests, optimize and scale up manufacture to reduce costs and show treatment cost effectiveness in a large statistically based clinical trial.
