- The ongoing climate change has also become for salmon aquaculture operations a burden. The increase in water temperatures seem to influence the robustness of Atl. salmon and its resilience to diseases. Adapted production technologies, developing new vaccine types, implementing improved and new health management programs are already implemented and returning positive effects. Moving production volumes to region with colder water temperatures, (e.g. lower than 6-8 degree Celsius over longer periods in the year), could be an additional measure. Main objective of this study is therefore to investigate whether nutrient requirement calculations need to be adapted when feeding large Atl. salmon at colder water temperatures. A factorial research design, conducted in open net pens at practical conditions was chosen to answer this question.

- There is a big gap in the literature focussed on salmon nutritional trials, on feeding and performance at winter temperatures. However, sea temperature profile in some of the important production areas in Norway face those lower temperatures for quite a few months each production cycle. Therefore, it is important to increase the knowledge on winter nutritional requirements to secure not only optimal performance but also robustness of our fish. From those very few papers performed at low temperatures, it was found that high levels of starch as well as lower digestibility of certain raw materials, mainly plant meals, in salmon diets, could play a detrimental role in performance. Since the levels of plant meals increased in commercial diets and will potentially increase further to complain with more sustainable schemes, we performed a trial following those concepts to optimise the current offer of winter feeds to secure optimal performance in salmon in cold water.

- In this project we will explore nutrient ingredients that influence the pigmentations of the salmon. The synthetic astaxanthin is an efficient antioxidant within feed and fish but the use of astaxanthin for coloring of the flesh is the main function. Recent changes in the legislation with the exclusion of use of the synthetic antioxidant ethoxyquin in the salmon feed have resulted in an new mix of antioxidant within the feed. In addition to a more challenged farming situation with more physical handling of the fish, this together have put an constrain on the astaxanthin pigment in the feed and fish. Therefore understanding how some specific ingredients influence on the feed and flesh pigment level is of high importance. In this project we will focus on pigment product type, oil types and vitamins which are influencing positive or negative on color in commercial grower feed for Atlantic salmon. Within the oil composition there is knowledge that phospholipids are particular involved in fat metabolism and pigment gut uptake. The long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) with the eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6n-3) acids have shown to be an positive contributor to color but little is known in relation to omega-6 (n-6) levels and pigment. Better knowledge about nutrient color enhancing effects will lead to better sustainable use of pigment resources and stabilize our Mowi salmon color.

- Achieving high growth performance with lowest feed cost is a key component for successful salmon farming. It is known that dietary digestible protein (DP) levels are a major driver for growth performance in Atl. salmon diets. It is obvious that dietary DP levels below requirement will reduce growth performance. On the other hand, DP levels above the requirement for growth would increase significantly feed cost and therefore reduce profitability but also sustainability of salmon operations. The optimal dietary DP content is supposed to change by fish size and the environment conditions (water temperature, day light, disease pressure). Another influencing factor is the constant genetic selection for growth performance. Genetically improved growth performance is usually a result of increased protein deposition capacity of an animal and might require diets with increased protein levels. Digestible protein requirements might therefore have changed due to genetic selection and changed environmental conditions.

- In this project we will examined how the dietary vitamins improves the oxidative status of the fish. By doing this we can improve and balance our grower feed and improve the fish quality of our Mowi salmon. We will measure the vitamin storage and follow up main response parameters as feed intake, growth and feed conversion ratio, simple flesh quality (fat and colour), and general fish health including gut health assessments. If we can improve the antioxidant status of the fish this may improves the retention of pigment in the fish and the visual color of the salmon in addition. Better balanced nutritional diets which improves the oxidative status of the fish may make the fish more robust in many welfare farming situations in addition to contribute to better economy. Filet color are one of the main quality criteria for the salmon marked. If we can obtain more efficient pigmentation of the fish by balancing the vitamins in the feed we can save resources in addition to adding more value to the fish.

- Fish meal is still considered an essential raw material for carnivorous fish like salmon. The increasing demand over the last few decades and the static supply has led to a steadily increase of the market price of this ingredient that has put a lot of pressure in the aquaculture industry to find alternative ingredients. For those reasons it is extremely important for us to find the key to a further reduction of fish meal or even the total depletion in the near future. One of the main problems when reducing fish meal is the reduction of feed intake that ends up affecting the performance of the fish, this could be related with the soluble protein fraction of the fish meal, rich in free aminoacids, small peptides and nucleotides, as this fraction is lacking in most protein plants. To cover that gap, hydrolysates seems to be the best current solution in the market, as they are extremely rich in soluble proteins so small inclusions will cover the lack of a good proportion of fish meal. The purpose of this project is to test whether the use of hydrolysates can cover the gap in salmon performance when we reduce the levels of fish meal further down from our current commercial levels or even when fish meal is not present at all in the feeds.

- In this project with an evaluation of an in-vivo juvenile growth model Mowi Feed will explore an new possible method of assessment of feed raw materials and feed processing techniques. By doing this we can potentially improve our raw material and feed processing technical competence and get new knowledge on potentially develop new raw materials. In the salmon feed industry there is an race to explore our raw material in an best possible way. New noble ingredients are very often produced in small quantities and an small scale in-vivo test methods of evaluating raw material effects on growth performance is of high value. Known feed raw materials is also very useful to link to an salmon growth performance test as the raw materials are sometimes have some variation in quality. An future increase of an Mowi Feed raw material test capacity can potentially lead to an development of an even more sustainable farmed salmon.

- In order to keep an optimum balance between feed costs and productivity, all feed components should be verified for nutrient concentration and these values are then used to formulate the rations and required supplements. However, the used ingredients may differ widely in composition. Optimizing the production of animal nutrition is vital, since it represents the greatest operating cost. NIR helps to deliver the best quality at lowest cost. The main objective of this project is to to expand and enhance NIR calibration algorithms. Those models monitor and quantify all kind of materials on fat, protein, fiber, moisture ash and more, making it ideal for a wide variety of feeds, feed ingredients and other foodstuffs.

- In the production of extruded salmon feed, a number of technical and nutritional quality attributes must be achieved to succesfully supply the feed from the manufacturing site to the fish farm waters to allow efficient salmon growth. Fat can not leak from the pores of the feed pellets, the feed pellets must sink at optimal velocity, the product can not disintegrate during transport, pellet size must be correct and be uniform across all pellets and, obviously, the feed should meet declared energy- and protein content. In present fish farm manufacturing environments, manual tests are being carried out in trying to assess some of the quality attributes in often highly time consuming tests. Test results are often connected with a human factor bias as well as a high variation from a relatively low amount of tests being carried out for a large production volume. With this project we aim to be able to automate the QA process using a central robotic quality assessment unit, connected to sample extractors and sample transport hoses. The automated quality tests will be developed and optimized to be highly specific for properties relevant for our customers, the salmon farmers. The succesfull execution of the proposed development project would allow QA data to be unbiased from human factor interaction. In further, the high amount of sampled data will allow more robust process control, as well as add certainty to the process of approving feed for sales. Lastly, the higher amount of unbiased product quality data logged will allow much greater detail in post-processing analyses. This will, in time, unlock a potential to reveal yet unexplored connections between formulation, raw material properties, process parameters and obtained product quality. Ultimately, this will then allow Mowi Feed to supply healthier-, more efficient- as well as more environmentally friendly feed, to our customers in salmon farming.

- There has been a general decline in fillet pigmentation levels in the salmon industry over the last few years despite the fact that the amount of pigment included in the diet has been the same, if not higher, during that period. One of the hypothesis for this pigment decrease was that astaxanthin, main pigment used in salmon feeds, could act as an antioxidant in stress situations, instead of being stored in the fillet. However, recent research conducted by public institutions has also pointed the global reduction driven to comply with sustainability targets, of certain components from marine ingredients used in salmon feeds, could be the cause of this decline. This project will try to elucidate whether, that hypothesis could be validated, using current commercial formulations and testing alternatives to those marine components keeping the sustainability of our feeds.

- Faba beans contain relatively high digestible protein but also high amounts of good starch quality required to create stable pellets during the production process. When Faba beans are added to a salmon feed the outer hull is usually removed. Main reason for not adding whole beans is the significant proportion of the anti-nutrient factors (ANF) present in Faba beans which is removed in the process of de-hulling (Vidal-Valverde et al., 1998). However, literature but also own results indicate that whole Faba beans have a similar protein digestibility as dehulled beans. The objective of the study is therefore to investigate whether it is still necessary to dehull Faba beans before using them for Atlantic salmon nutrition.

Another influencing factor is the constant genetic selection for growth performance. Genetically improved growth performance is usually a result of increased protein deposition capacity of an animal and might require diets with increased protein levels. Digestible protein requirements might therefore have changed due to genetic selection and changed environmental conditions.

- As recently reviewed in a publication at the Aquaculture nutrition scientific journal (Kaur et al.2022), Krill meal has been tested at different stages of salmon life cycle since the late eighties. In most of the studies performed, partial replacement of Fish meal by Krill meal has been described as positive for performance and quality of the fillet. Most of those studies were, however, using control feeds that are, nowadays quite different in composition to modern commercial diets, in where the use of marine ingredients has been extremely reduced. The low inclusion levels of fish meal that are still currently present in salmon feeds are covering some nutritional aspects that go beyond protein requirements such us palatability and other sensory attributes that it has been difficult to replace when using only plant meals. Production of krill meal has evolved the last couple of decades as technology on the catching vessels has improved quite significantly to secure a high quality product that keeps high sustainability standards. Main attributes of Krill meal beyond a fair level of protein (~60%), are high levels of marine phospholipids, choline, astaxanthin and low molecular weight compounds that act as attractants. All of those functional nutrients have been reported to be beneficial in Atlantic salmon to improve palatability, lipid transport fillet quality and control inflammatory responses. Those attributes and the sustainability aspect of the production of this product make it really interesting candidate to fully replace the fish meal left in Atlantic salmon feeds. In this project we will test a partial and full replacement of fish meal by krill meal that has been produced adding back the stick water during its production and the effect of this replacement in performance, fish health and fillet quality.

- Production of extruded salmon feed is often connected to issues with leakage of fat from within the pellets. This can be reasoned by challenging raw materials in combination with non-optimal processing conditions. With this project we aim to be able to apply the targeted amount of fat onto the extruded feed by optimizing process conditions to adapt towards recipe and raw materials. New analyses and response variables in the process will be developed to enhance the understanding and causality behind the different occurences of fat leaking from the pellets. This allows to build a computational model to optimize oilmix, coating and cooling parameters specifically for each product, as a response to recipe and quality attributes of the raw materials.

- For adequate bone mineralisation dietary phosphorus (P) intake is essential in vertebrates. P deficiency can cause growth retardation and bone deformities in Atl. salmon. Historically, fishmeal is a good dietary P source to avoid such problems in Atl. salmon. To increase the sustainability of salmon aquaculture feeds with lower fishmeal content but higher inclusion of vegetable protein were introduced. It became common practice to add high available mineral phosphorus sources to the feeds to cover the essential P requirement of Atl. salmon. Addition of these high available P products is oriented to meet similar or even higher available P levels compared to a fishmeal rich diet. Comparing the development of the whole body P content of Atl. salmon, raised in seawater from 75 g to 5000 g, with the dietary P intake, revealed that approximately 35% of the dietary P is retained in the body. As phosphorus is mainly used for bone mineralisation and only little for metabolic purposes it must be assumed that nearly 75% of the dietary phosphorus is secreted via gills and feces into the environment. The main objective of this research project is therefore to investigate the effect of a dietary P reduction on growth performance, bone mineralisation and spinal deformities in large Atl. salmon.

- There has been a general decline in fillet pigmentation levels in the salmon industry over the last few years despite the fact that the amount of pigment included in the diet has been the same, if not higher, during that period. One of the hypothesis for this pigment decrease was that astaxanthin, main pigment used in salmon feeds, could act as an antioxidant in stress situations, instead of being stored in the fillet. However, recent research conducted by public institutions has also pointed the global reduction driven to comply with sustainability targets, of certain components from marine ingredients used in salmon feeds, could be the cause of this decline. This project will try to elucidate whether, that hypothesis could be validated, using current commercial formulations and testing alternatives to those marine components keeping the sustainability of our feeds.

- Corn gluten meal (CGM) is a potential highly interesting raw material for salmon feeds. On dry matter base CGM contains around 65% crude protein and has a suitable amino acid profile. A high protein and amino acid bioavailability, a good supply situation and the current market price make CGM highly economic in salmon feed formulations. CGM can be also considered as fairly sustainable as it is a by-product from the corn starch or sometimes ethanol production. There are, however, also objections to feeding CGM to Atl. Salmon. So is CGM rich in yellow xanthophylls. Adding yellow pigments to a salmon diet is considered to act contra-productive to the wanted increase in red color of salmon flesh. It is also reported that high inclusion of CGM might depress overall digestibility, feed intake and growth in Atl. Salmon. The project is supposed to investigate this discrepancies.

- Feed accounts for 70-80% of the climate emissions of a salmon that is not transported by plane, and is mainly related to imported feed raw materials. If the Norwegian aquaculture industry is to achieve long-term and sustained growth as the authorities want, we must find feed raw materials with a lower climate footprint than those used in the pellet today. A major challenge for the aquaculture sector is access to sustainable and cost-effective feed ingredients. The crops of the faba bean are cultivated in Europe and the processing to a high rich protein concentrate makes this protein source very attractive for the aquaculture industry. Guar beans are not a locally sourced but are an interesting option for the aquaculture industry as well since the crop as such is cultivated on soil that is not suitable for other crops and also improves the soil. With the protein up- concentration in the production of those two legumes we might be able to add 2 new raw materials to the raw material basket and can be more independent on other, less sustainable protein concentrates, such as SPC (soy bean concentrate). The project"FALAFEL" is designed to increase knowledge on the potential of one of the 2 commercial products of in diets for Atlantic Salmon post smolts and their possible max. inclusion level.

- In this project we will examined the effectiveness of omega-3 (n-3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6n-3) acid in Mowi salmon. We will measured the deposition of EPA & DHA during the ongrowth-phase of the unique Atlantic salmon, Mowi strain, to build good nutritional models. Global supply of the LC PUFA is limited and we need to increase utilisation of the EPA & DHA resources in salmon feed. The feed content of marine oils have decreased during the last decade and the farming condition demands more physical handling of the salmon, and therefore we need new documentation and better nutrient models of the LC n-3 PUFA in our salmon.

- In this project we will examined how the pigment of synthetic astaxanthin is effected when added at different stages of the feed process. We will measure the pigment retention during the feed process but in addition we will assess the effects on the rainbow trout flesh pigmentation retention by performing an nutritional study dietary study. In the nutritional study we will evaluate the visual flesh color in our fish samples. Retention of astaxanthin and visual color of the filet of salmonids is influenced by feed composition, feed process in addition to metabolically effects, environmental effects and stress on the fish. Filet color are one of the main quality criteria for the salmon marked. If we can obtain more efficient pigmentation of the fish by improved technologies for adding color in the feed we can save resources in addition to adding more value to the fish.

- In this project we will examinate the efficacy of new synthetic sources of L-Histidine (His) monohydrochloride monohydrate to support tissue His status and cataract mitigation in Atlantic salmon smolt after sea transfer by using up-to-date industrial diets. Cataracts are a typical example of a production-related order, i.e., non-infective and surplus of dietary His higher than the requirement for growth mitigate cataract development. For example, plant ingredients tend to have insufficient essential amino acids such as His to cover the dietary levels needed to mitigate the production-related disorder cataract, and His as a functional additive mitigates the problem, although at an high economical cost. Until recently only one supplier of the synthetic histidine have been present in the market as the only company allow to delivered according to the European union EFSA legislations. Currently there are two new suppliers which recently got the EFSA approval for L-Histidine monohydrochloride monohydrate for salmonids. If the new His suppliers are proved to have higher efficacy then we can make feed which is having an improved mitigation effects on the production disorder cataract. This means potentially improved fish health welfare.

- Due to the increasing number of raw material sources and the ever changing raw material options, effective inclusion of a new ingredient into a diet involves an initial step of determining its digestibility, there are various ways to do this but practically the best option is often the "indicator method" this is based on using either an internal or external (included as 0,01-2% of diet) indicator. Percentage present in feed and feaeces are then measured and used to estimate the digestibility coefficient. An inert marker for the estimation of digestibility should ideally be: Indigestible Unabsorbable Does not alter organoleptic properties of diet Passage rate similar to rest of digesta Does not interfere with digestive or absorptive processes External markers that have been used previously such as Acid-insoluble ash, Chromium oxide,Cholestane, Crude fibre,yttrium each have pros and cons about them. Currently to the best of our knowledge there is no published data on yttrium oxide (an inert, rare earth metal that is used as a digestibility marker) dispersal within the fish flesh and so this is just an initial assessment to ensure that it is not the case when used in the diet.

Atlantic salmon are highly dependent on their innate immune system, but proper function is often compromised due to a variety of reasons. Certain feed additives are known to stimulate the immune system of Atlantic salmon and other animals, leading to a significantly better immune response when faced with e.g. pathogenic bacteria. The result is lower mortality and morbidity, and improved animal welfare. With the commercialized harvest in Norway and the development of a refined finished product, the copepod Calanus finmarchicus becomes available as feed ingredient to the aquaculture industry. With its favorable chemical composition the resource ticks many boxes for use in Norwegian salmon feed: Locally sourced and produced, low trophic level, high level of protein with a balanced amino acids composition, and free amino acids that are known to improve feed intake. The poultry meal is another viable option for the replacement of fish meal in salmon feed. The viscera are co-products of the poultry slaughtering industry and are of fresh and high quality. European legislation has already 2013 (Regulation 56/2013) opened for the usage of non-ruminant origin animal by-products in European fish feed. - The aim of this project is to improve the physical quality of salmon feed. The intention is to develop tools and procedures to anticipate production issues that could affect the quality of our feeds and, ultimately, have a potential negative effect on the performance of our fish. More specifically we will be focus having a better understanding of factors causing fat leakage in salmon feeds and the development of the NIR technology with the view of having more control of nutrient composition in a faster way.

- In this project we will examined how the dietary vitamins improves the oxidative status of the fish. By doing this we can improve and balance our grower feed and improve the fish quality of our Mowi salmon. We will measure the vitamin storage and follow up main response parameters as feed intake, growth and feed conversion ratio, simple flesh quality (fat and colour), and general fish health including gut health assessments. If we can improve the antioxidant status of the fish this may improves the retention of pigment in the fish and the visual color of the salmon in addition. Better balanced nutritional diets which improves the oxidative status of the fish may make the fish more robust in many welfare farming situations in addition to contribute to better economy. Filet color are one of the main quality criteria for the salmon marked. If we can obtain more efficient pigmentation of the fish by balancing the vitamins in the feed we can save resources in addition to adding more value to the fish.

- Salmon farming success and high revenue, has been achieved through the development of breeding programs, disease control strategies, technology and to a greater extent to the optimization of the salmon feeds. The level of optimization and control of all nutritional and physical factors of salmon feed to secure optimal performance, is quite high, but there are still subtle factors that could have potentially been overseen, especially those related with operational procedures at the different factories. Hence, more research is needed to assess whether those factors could compromise salmon performance at all. In this project, we will evaluate the effect of short term storage of commercial feeds on feed intake and performance of salmon being especially focus on oxidation status of the feeds.

- Feed accounts for 70-80% of the climate emissions of a salmon that is not transported by plane, and is mainly related to imported feed raw materials. If the Norwegian aquaculture industry is to achieve long-term and sustained growth as the authorities want, we must find feed raw materials with a lower climate footprint than those used in the pellet today. A major challenge for the aquaculture sector is access to sustainable and cost-effective feed ingredients. The crops of the faba bean and barley are cultivated in Europe and the processing to a high rich protein concentrate makes this protein source very attractive for the aquaculture industry. Guar beans are not a locally sourced but are an interesting option for the aquaculture industry as well since the crop as such is cultivated on soil that is not suitable for other crops and also improves the soil. With the protein up- concentration in the production of those two legumes and one cereal product we might be able to add three new raw materials to the raw material basket and can be more independent on other, less sustainable protein concentrates, such as SPC (soy bean concentrate).
