Sensors will be subjected to physical scratches and abrasion, ESD events and salty sweat due to human touches, and will be exposed to UV, moisture, and even rain and extreme weather.     Develop a cost effective, reliable large sized sensor based on Active Thermal (TM) principle that is an ideal biometric solution for high security government identification, homeland security, and law enforcement applications. All current commercially available large fingerprint scanners are optical based sensor with large form factor, heavy weight, and high power consumption. Optical based sensors are also known to be susceptible to sunlight interference severely limiting the use in outdoor environment. These shortcomings make optical based technology difficult to create a truly low-power, light weight, and all-weather mobile FAP60 fingerprint scanner that is cost-effective and highly secure.

    The project involves developing a thin-film protective coating that can significantly improve fingerprint sensor durability and ruggedness against scratch and abrasion. This new thin-film protective coating will be harder or tougher than the current NEXT Biometrics Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating. The coating will offer a high thermal conductivity for Active Thermal (NEXT Trademark) sensor and will have high electrical resistance to enable capacitive scan during normal fingerprint image capture operation. The coating layer and the manufacturing step will be applicable to rigid sensor as well as to flexible sensor for smart card or smart ID applications.
