  Prosjektet "Fjellrev i Finnmark" startet opp i 2004 og ligger til grunn for en lang periode med uttak av rødrev på Varangerhalvøya som et fjellrevtiltak. Tiltaket var ikke tilstrekkelig for å stoppe nedgangen på Varangerhalvøya, men kunnskapen fra prosjektet la grunnlag for å igangsette en mer omfattende tiltakspakke fra 2017: utsetting av fjellrev i kombinasjon med støttefôring og uttak av rødrev. Det er en kombinasjon av disse tiltakene som skal videreføres for å re-etablere en levedyktig fjellrevbestand i Finnmark. Gjennomføringen og evaluering av tiltakspakken vil være et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom NINA og UiT innen Fjellrevmodulen av COAT-Klimaøkologiske observasjonssystem for Arktisk Tundra (Ims m. fl. 2013). COATs fjellrevmodul vil videreføre overvåkningen av økosystembetingelsene for fjellrevbestandens videre utvikling i Finnmark i sammenheng med den nye tiltakspakken. Økosystemene i nordområdene er i rask endring på grunn av et stadig varmere klima. Derfor vil gårsdagens kunnskap ikke gi et gyldig grunnlag for forvaltningen av morgendagens økosystem. Økosystemovervåkningen knyttet til fjellrevmodulen av COAT vil være en videreføring av overvåkningsserier fra 2004. Lange og konsistente tidsserier er helt sentralt i dette arbeidet for å analysere sammenhenger og endringer i et økosystemet der smågnagerdynamikk med 3-4 års syklus er helt sentral. Undersøkelsene i 3-års perioden skal spesielt rette seg mot rødrev og økosystembetingelser.
