  Før selve saneringsjobben tar til skal det i egen entreprise etableres en avskjærende grøft mellom deponiet og omkringliggende terreng. Formålet med den avskjærende grøften er å redusere mengden overflatevann som i dag infiltrerer inn på deponiet. Det lyses ut prekvalifisering til saneringsentreprisen, som vil være en samspillsentreprise. De prekvalifiserte entreprenørene for sanering av deponiet vil bli bedt om å gjennomføre hvert sitt pilotforsøk. Forsøket skjer ved at det hentes ut masser fra deponiet ifbm grøfteentreprisen. Massene tilbys så de prekvalifiserte entreprenørene som gjør forsøk på å separere massene og sortere ut fraksjoner som kan være egnet til gjenbruk/resirkulering og ha ulike løsninger for sluttbehandling. For eksempel kan grus, stein, glass og metall gå til gjenbruk/resirkulering, mens farlig avfall, elektrisk avfall, sterkt forurensede maser og rene masser vil ha ulike sluttbehandlinger. Formålet er å utvikle de beste metodene til å sortere massene fra deponiet når saneringsarbeidet på Slettebakken gjennomføres. Dette vil gjøre at andelen masser som må leveres til ny deponering blir redusert mest mulig, og også kunne redusere kostnadene for prosjektet, i tråd med Bergen kommunens ambisjoner for sirkulær økonomi.
