Most of the fleet (types 74 and 75) uses traction converters with PEC2 microprocessor cards from ABB/Hitachi, which have been declared end-of-life as of 31 December 2023. This will gradually reduce repair and spare part availability, increasing the risk of operational disruptions and higher maintenance costs. The newer type 76 trainsets use PEC3 modules, which are not considered critical for replacement at this time.\n\nThe PEC module is a key component of the traction converter, controlling power delivery to the train\ufffds traction motors and auxiliary systems. The design and software are proprietary to ABB/Hitachi, and the vehicle control system can only be modified by Stadler. Any upgrade must ensure full compatibility with existing systems and safety requirements.\n\nNorske tog is considering a fleet-wide upgrade from PEC2 to a newer platform (e.g., PEC4) to ensure long-term reliability and cost-effectiveness. While we believe this may be a task best suited for the original manufacturer or supplier, Norwegian procurement regulations require us to investigate whether alternative suppliers or solutions exist.
